Borgese Sets Two School Records in Double-Overtime Thriller

Box Score

(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson women's basketball team outlasted Centennial Conference front-runner, Haverford College, 73-68, in double-overtime on Thursday night, handing the 'Fords just their second conference loss of the season.

Senior captain Bridget Borgese (Swarthmore, Pa./Notre Dame de Namur) set a school record, hitting 16 free throws on the night. She was perfect from the line for another school mark, going 16-for-16 from the stripe. Her performance also tied a Centennial Conference record for percentage in a game, matching a 16-for-16 outing by Franklin & Marshall's Lauren Howanski in 2001.

The Red Devils came out strong, taking a 12-6 lead in the opening five minutes of the game. The 'Fords pulled even and the lead went back-and-forth, with Dickinson holding a 28-24 advantage at the break.

Dickinson stretched the lead to five early in the second half but Haverford responded. Elizabeth Lynch drained back-to-back three-pointers to put the 'Fords in front, 36-35, with 11:53 remaining in the game.

Haverford came alive with a small run to take a 45-39 lead with 8:10 remaining. Borgese traded a pair of free throws with a Haverford lay-up before first-year Rachel Sisco (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) buried a three-pointer to cut the lead to 47-44.

Sisco knocked-down another jumper to later pull the Devils even, 49-49, with 2:44 on the clock. Senior Dominique Meeks hit one-of-two free throws to give Haverford a one-point edge with just over two minutes remaining in regulation.

Borgese would come up big again, hitting a pair of free throws to put Dickinson in front, 51-50, with 1:01 left to play. Rachel Baskin answered on the other end, forcing a Red Devil timeout with 19 seconds to play. Senior Belma Mekic (Sarajevo, Bosnia/Cedar Cliff, Pa.) scored with 16 seconds left, to put Dickinson back on top.

Jacquelyne Pizzuto drove the lane and drew a foul with eight seconds left, hitting one-of-two to tie the game, 53-53. The Devils had a final shot, but it was just off the mark, sending the game into overtime.

Strong play from Mekic and classmate Dana Walsh (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) gave Dickinson a 59-53 cushion just under two minutes remaining in the first overtime period. Haverford would claw back in once again, however, cutting the deficit to three, 60-57, with 49 second to play. The 'Fords forced a turnover and Emily Sweet drained a huge three-pointer with 16 seconds to go, which would lead to another extra frame.

Borgese went 6-for-6 from the line in the final overtime while Mekic hit 5-of-6 as Dickinson held on to claim the victory, 73-67. Walsh put the game out of reach, hitting two free throws in the final two seconds as Dickinson hit 13-of-14 free throws in the final overtime.

Borgese led all scorers with a game-high 20 points with 16 coming from the line. She added seven rebounds on the night as well. Mekic came away with a double-double night, scoring 18 points and controlling 16 rebounds. She finished 8-of-11 from the line.

Walsh was 7-for-8 from the line, scoring 13 points, grabbing seven rebounds and recording three steals. Sisco tallied eight points and three assists while sophomore Sarah Phillips (West Amwell, N.J./South Hunterdon) chipped in with seven rebounds, five points, two assists and two steals.

Rachel Baskin led Haverford (9-3, 6-2 CC) with 19 points and three steals. Pizzuto and Meeks each finished with 11 points.

The Red Devils improve to 8-4 overall and 4-3 in the Centennial Conference. They are on the road on Saturday, traveling to Swarthmore College for a 1:00 pm tip-off.
