(Swarthmore, Pa.) – Coming off an emotional but draining, double-overtime win on Thursday, the Dickinson women's basketball team suffered a tough, 73-51, road loss at Swarthmore on Saturday afternoon.
The Red Devils played even with the hosts in the early going before a 14-2 run gave Swarthmore a 13 point lead with 6:50 remaining in the first half. A three-pointer by Madeline Ross stretched the lead to 36-20 at the 4:21 mark.
Ross had a monster game, scoring 26 points in the first half, putting the Garnet in control, 45-23, at the break. She knocked-down a remarkable six triples, shooting 10-for-19 from the field. She was much more manageable in the second half, but still finished with a game-high 30 points, hitting 7-of-12 three-pointers in the game, and handing out four assists in the second half.
The Garnet extended the margin to 24 at the 14:03 mark, 61-37, and would remain in control throughout the contest.
Elle Larson added 13 points and nine rebounds for Swarthmore, who improves to 11-2 overall and 7-1 in the Centennial Conference. Katie Lytle posted a double-double with 10 points and a game-high 12 rebounds.
Senior Bridget Borgese (Swarthmore, Pa./Notre Dame de Namur) led the Red Devils with 11 points and eight rebounds, hitting 5-of-6 free throws. Classmate Belma Mekic (Sarajevo, Bosnia/Cedar Cliff, Pa.) reached double-figures with 10 points, adding five rebounds and a pair of steals. She was perfect from the line, sinking all six attempts as the Devils combined to hit 14-of-17 from the line as a team.
Sophomores Sarah Phillips (West Amwell, N.J./South Hunterdon) and Liz Schultz (Dunmore, Pa./Scranton Prep) scored seven and six points on the day, respectively.
The Red Devils slip to 8-5 overall and 4-5 in the conference. They return home to face Muhlenberg College on Tuesday night at 7:00 pm.
