(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson women's basketball team returned to the friendly confines of the Kline Center and posted another key Centennial Conference win, knocking-off Muhlenberg College, 64-51, on Tuesday night.
Senior co-captain Dana Walsh (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) led the way with an outstanding performance, posting a double-double with game-highs of 16 points and 12 rebounds. She hit 8-of-10 free throws on the night and handed out a pair of assists.
The visiting Mules jumped out to an early lead, taking a 9-2 advantage in the opening five minutes. Sophomore Sarah Phillips (West Amwell, N.J./South Hunterdon) drained a three-pointer to trigger a Red Devil rally with classmate Liz Schultz (Dunmore, Pa./Scranton Prep) tying the game at the 9:48 mark.
Muhlenberg closed out the half with a 6-1 run to pull in front, 32-26, at the break. Phillips keyed a quick start for the Devils as another triple led to a 7-0 start, giving Dickinson the lead at the 17:50 mark. The teams went back-and-forth for the better part of the second half with the game seeing its 11th tie with just under four minutes remaining in regulation.
Alita Zabrecky gave the Mules a 51-50 lead at the 3:28 mark before senior Lindsay Finnerty (Tenafly, N.J./Tenafly) answered on the other end with a huge three-pointer. The Devils would not relinquish the lead from that point, using solid free throw shooting down the stretch to secure the win.
Senior Belma Mekic (Sarajevo, Bosnia/Cedar Cliff, Pa.) broke away for a lay-up to extend the Devils' lead to four before they combined to knockdown 9-of-10 free throws in the final 1:17, and going 6-for-6 in the final 36 seconds of the game.
Mekic finished with 10 points and six rebounds on the night, dishing out a pair of assists to go with three steals. Finnerty reached double-figures with 10 points as well, hitting 4-of-5 free throws and controlling four rebounds.
Bridget Borgese (Swarthmore, Pa./Notre Dame de Namur) added nine points and five rebounds, going 5-for-6 from the stripe. Phillips finished with nine as well, hitting a trio of three-pointers and handing out three assists. First-year Rachel Sisco (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) turned in a solid performance at the point guard position.
Leanna Tallamy led Muhlenberg with 11 points while Erin Laney controlled 10 rebounds. The Mules slip to 9-5 overall and 6-3 in the Centennial Conference.
The Red Devils are home again on Thursday, hosting Franklin & Marshall at 7:00 pm. They are home again on Saturday, playing the first game of a double-header against Johns Hopkins. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 pm.
