(Collegeville, Pa.) – The Dickinson women's basketball team outscored host Ursinus College, 23-6, over the final seven minutes to claim a, 68-57 victory, on Saturday afternoon.
The Red Devils trailed, 51-45, with 7:13 remaining in the contest. Senior Bridget Borgese (Swarthmore, Pa./Notre Dame de Namur) scored 10 points, hitting 6-of-8 free throws down the stretch, while the Red Devils held the Bears to just three field-goals.
Ursinus scored first and led throughout the first half. The Bears held a 16-10 advantage at the 8:34 mark and stretched the margin to their biggest lead of the game, 27-18, with 2:24 remaining in the half.
Seniors Belma Mekic (Sarajevo, Bosnia/Cedar Cliff, Pa.) and Lindsay Finnerty (Tenafly, N.J./Tenafly) each scored twice before Alyssa Polimeni sank a pair of free throws to put Ursinus in front, 29-26, at halftime.
Borgese gave the Devils a brief lead at the 15:23 mark, but the Bears answered with a three-pointer from Devin Butchko. The Bears extended the lead to six, and held a 51-45 advantage with 7:13 remaining in regulation.
Caroline Shimrock gave Ursinus its final lead, scoring at the 2:48 mark. Senior Dana Walsh (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) grabbed an offensive rebound and scored to put the Devils in front for good, just seconds later.
The Red Devils continued to build on the lead, hitting 13-of-16 free throws to secure the win. The Red Devils finished 24-for-30 from the line, shooting 80 percent for the game. They shot a solid 45 percent from the field and held a 39-33 advantage on the boards.
Mekic scored a game-high 20 points to lead the Red Devils. She went 4-for-4 from the line, adding four assists and a pair of steals. Walsh went 7-for-10 from the line, scoring 17 points and controlling nine rebounds.
Borgese tallied 17 points as well, adding six rebounds while going 9-for-12 from the line. Finnerty added eight points and five rebounds while senior Kelsey Barclay (New York, N.Y./Loyola School) chipped in with four points and an assist.
Jessica Porada led Ursinus with 12 points and 10 rebounds as the Bears fall to 8-10 overall and 5-8 in the Centennial Conference. Polimeni added 12 points and Shimrock reached double-figures with 10.
The Red Devils improve to 11-7 overall and 7-7 in the conference play. They return home to face McDaniel College on Thursday night at 6:00 pm.
