(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson women's basketball team jumped out to an early lead on visiting Haverford, but the 'Fords rallied and then held off the Devils, 57-54, on Saturday.
The Red Devils scored the first seven points of the game and pulled in front, 13-2, at the 16 minute mark. Sophomore Rachel Sisco (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) made a steal and fed junior Liz Schultz (Dunmore, Pa./Scranton Prep) to give Dickinson an 18-4 lead with 13:09 to play in the half.
Haverford went on a 10-2 run, to cut the margin to six, 20-14, with 8:59 on the clock. The 'Fords tied the game as the teams went into the break, 26-26.
The second half was back and forth after Haverford opened with a pair of quick baskets. The Devils regained the lead for the first time with 10:53 remaining, going up 39-38, on a Sarah Phillips (West Amwell, N.J./South Hunterdon) three-pointer.
Schultz drained a three-pointer to put the Devils up, 44-41, but Hope Rainey answered with one of her own on the other end.
First-year Mary Martin (Honesdale, Pa./Honesdale) gave Dickinson a 48-44 advantage with 4:34 remaining in the game. Rachel Baskin led the 'Fords back into the game, scoring five straight points, giving them a 49-48 lead with 3:30 left to play.
Following a lay-up by Nina Voith, Helen Roberts (Oakton, Va./Oakton) and Martin scored to put Dickinson in front, 52-51, with 1:42 to play. Cara Wyant scored on the other end and first-year Jennifer Smith (Short Hills, N.J./Millburn) hit one-of-two free throws to tie the game, 53-53.
Voith scored for Haverford and Smith went to the line again, splitting a pair to make the score, 55-54, Haverford. Elizabeth Lynch drew a foul and hit both to stretch the lead to three.
The Devils missed and were forced to foul, but Jacquelyne Pizzuto missed the front end of a one-and-one with eight seconds on the clock. Unfortunately the Red Devils could not answer, falling 57-54.
Martin led the Red Devils with a double-double, scoring 12 points and controlling 10 rebounds to go with a pair of steals. She hit 4-of-5 free throws on the night. Schultz hit a pair of three's, scoring 10 points.
Phillips tallied eight points and a pair of steals while Kelsey Walsh (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) dished out three assists to go with four points. Smith added seven points and three rebounds, and Sam Kennedy (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) scored six points. Erica Buls (New Market, Md./Oakdale) chipped in with five points and five rebounds.
Voith led Haverford (3-0, 1-0) with 15 points six rebounds, two blocks and two steals. Lynch reached double figures with a double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds.
The Red Devils slip to 1-3 overall and 0-1 in the Centennial Conference. They travel to Gettysburg College on Tuesday night for a 6:00 pm tip-off.
