(Gettysburg, Pa.) – The Dickinson women's basketball team turned in a strong performance at defending Centennial Conference Champ and preseason favorite, Gettysburg College, on Tuesday night. The Red Devils trailed, just 28-27 at halftime, but dropped a 55-43 decision.
The Red Devils played even with the host Bullets for a majority of the first half. Gettysburg put together a 5-0 run at the midpoint of the opening stanza, to pull in front, 21-12, with 8:41 remaining.
Dickinson answered with an 11-3 run, cutting the deficit to just one point, 24-23, with 4:21 on the clock. First-year Helen Roberts (Oakton, Va./Oakton) and sophomore Sam Kennedy (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) bookended the run with three-pointers.
Junior Sarah Phillips (West Amwell, N.J./South Hunterdon) netted back-to-back jumpers to close the out half with Dickinson trailing by just a point.
Gettysburg went on a 15-2 run to open the second half, pulling in front, 43-29, with 9:40 remaining in the game.
Jennifer Smith (Short Hills, N.J./Millburn) scored five points to lead the Red Devils within six, 45-39, at the 4:57 mark. Emily Duggan answered for Gettysburg with a three-point play, and the Bullets sank 5-of-7 free throws down the stretch to hold on for the win.
Kennedy led the Devils with 10 points while first-year Mary Martin (Honesdale, Pa./Honesdale) controlled a game-high 14 rebounds, including six on the offensive end. Classmate Erica Buls (New Market, Md./Oakdale) grabbed six offensive rebounds as well, finishing with 11 overall to go with seven points.
Smith tallied nine points while Phillips finished with eight on the night.
Alyssa Isler led all scorers with 14 points while Caroline Murphy added 13 to lead Gettysburg (4-1, 2-1).
The Red Devils slip to 1-4 overall and 0-3 in the Centennial Conference. They travel to McDaniel College on December 3rd to face the Green Terror at 6:00 pm.
