(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson women's basketball teamed turned in a solid performance against visiting Swarthmore College on Saturday, despite falling 65-57.
The Red Devils, staring five first-years on Saturday, jumped out to 7-0 start, and led 10-2 with 16:30 to play in the half. Swarthmore would answer, tying the game, 14-14, at the 12:08 mark.
The Garnet built a seven point lead with just over five minutes remaining, and went into the break with a 36-30 advantage.
Swarthmore doubled the margin in the opening seven minutes, taking a 49-37 lead. They stretched the lead to 57-41, but the Red Devils would rally to cut the deficit to just six points.
Junior Sarah Phillips (West Amwell, N.J./South Hunterdon) buried a three-pointer and first-year Jennifer Smith (Short Hills, N.J./Millburn) scored off a nice assist from classmate Kelsey Walsh (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) to cut the lead to six, with 23 seconds left to play.
The Garnet hit 2-of-4 free throws to hold on for a 65-57 win.
First-year Mary Martin (Honesdale, Pa./Honesdale) scored the first seven points on the way to 16 for the game. She added seven rebounds and a pair of steals. Phillips added 12 points and eight rebounds, going 4-for-6 from the field.
Smith finished with 12 points as well, adding six rebounds, four steals and a pair of assists. Liz Schultz (Dunmore, Pa./Scranton Prep) scored eight points and Helen Roberts (Oakton, Va./Oakton) chipped in with six points and a pair of steals, turning in a strong performance on the defensive end.
Katie Lytle led Swarthmore (4-4, 1-4) with 18 points and seven rebounds. Elle Larson added 17 points, eight rebounds, two assists and two steals.
The Red Devils slip to 1-6 overall and 0-5 in the Centennial Conference. They travel to Elizabethtown College on the 16th for a 7:00 pm tip-off.
