Red Devil Women Battle, Fall at Haverford 65-51

(Haverford, Pa.) – The Dickinson women's basketball team gave Haverford College a battle on Saturday before falling in the end, 65-51. The 'Fords improved to 12-1 overall and 7-1 in the Centennial Conference to hold onto second place.

 

The Red Devils struck first, and held a 9-8 lead with 11:14 remaining in the first half. Haverford used an 11-3 run, capped by a Jacquelyn Pizzuto three-pointer, to pull in front, 19-11, at the 7:37 mark.

 

Sophomore Sam Kennedy (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) hit a three-pointer, followed by a pair of free throws from junior Liz Schultz (Dunmore, Pa./Scranton Prep) to pull Dickinson within three, with 2:26 to play in the half.

 

Haverford answered with a three-pointer and a lay-up before Schultz found first-year Jennifer Smith (Short Hills, N.J./Millburn) for another three-pointer in the final minute. Nina Voith knocked-down a jumper to end the half with the host 'Fords in front, 33-26.

 

Shannon Smith led a strong start by Haverford to open the second half. She converted a three-point play to give the hosts a 40-30 advantage, with 15:53 remaining in the game.

 

Junior Sarah Phillips (West Amwell, N.J./South Hunterdon) pulled the Devils within five, hitting a three-pointer at the 11:56 mark. Haverford countered to take its biggest lead of the game, 51-38, with 8:27 on the clock.

 

The Red Devils weren't quite done yet, however, going on a 10-0 run to cut the deficit to three, 51-48, with 5:07 left in regulation. Haverford closed out the game with solid defense and strong free throw shooting, hitting their final six attempts from the line.

 

Voith led all scorers with 19 points, converting 7-of-8 free throws on the day. Pizzuto finished with 12 points while Smith tallied nine points and a game-high 14 rebounds. Smith added six blocked shots and three steals to her line as well.

 

Smith led the Red Devils with 12 points, seven rebounds and three steals on the day. Phillips reached double-figures with 10 points behind a pair of three-pointers, adding three rebounds.

 

First-year Erica Buls (New Market, Md./Oakdale) led the Devils with eight rebounds, adding five points. Rachel Sisco (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) and Kelsey Walsh (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) each scored five points while Walsh controlled five rebounds as well.

 

The Red Devils slip to 3-11 overall and 0-9 in the Centennial Conference. They travel to Franklin & Marshall on Wednesday night. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 pm.
