(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson women's basketball team suffered a 76-61 setback to unbeaten McDaniel College on Wednesday night. The Red Devils made a late run at the Green Terror but came up short, despite a solid team effort down the stretch.
The Red Devils had a strong start, taking a 7-6 lead on a three-pointer from senior Sarah Phillips (West Amwell, N.J./South Hunterdon).
McDaniel went on a 16-5 run, keyed by a pair of three-pointers and a lay-up from Steph Perez. Trailing 24-15, the Devils answered with an 8-2 clip to cut the deficit to one at the 7:36 mark.
Junior Lindsey Nichols led McDaniel on another run to close out the half. She scored 12 points down the stretch to put McDaniel on top, 45-32, at the break.
The Green Terror came out of halftime and built the lead to 57-36, at the 14:55 mark. The Devils were able to match the Terror over next 10 minutes, but could not make up any ground. They made one last charge, chipping the lead from 22 down to 11, with just over a minute to play.
Sophomore Jennifer Smith (Short Hills, N.J./Millburn) came off the bench to lead the charge. She scored six points, grabbed three rebounds, made a steal and handed out two assists in the final six minutes of the game.
Sophomore Mary Martin (Honesdale, Pa./Honesdale) led the Devils with 14 points and six rebounds, hitting 4-of-6 free throws. Sam Kennedy (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) went 5-for-5 from line, scoring 13 points to go with two rebounds, two assists, a steal and a blocked shot.
Smith finished with six points, six rebounds, four assists and four steals. Phillips finished with a pair of three-pointers and eight points.
Nichols led unbeaten McDaniel (5-0, 2-0) with 22 points, hitting 7-of-8 free throws.
The Red Devils slip to 1-5 overall and 0-4 in the Centennial Conference. They are home again on Thursday, hosting Muhlenberg College at 7:00 pm.
