(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson women's basketball team won a thriller over visiting Swarthmore College as first-year Myonie Williamson (Newtown Square, Pa./Radnor) put the Devils on top for the win with just 0.9 seconds on the clock. The Red Devils held on for a 48-47 decision at the Kline Center.
The game was tight the whole way with neither team gaining more than a three-point advantage in the first half. Abbey Deckard put Swarthmore on the board with a three-pointer in the opening minute. Senior Liz Schultz (Dunmore, Pa./Scranton Prep) knocked-down a three-pointer at the 16:47 mark to tie the game, 5-5.
Sophomore Ellen Bair (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg) put the Devils in front and then later hit a pair of free throws to knot the game, 11-11, with just under 13 minutes remaining in the half.
Williamson broke the fourth tie of the game, hitting three straight free throws to give Dickinson a 16-13 advantage with 9:46 to play in the half. Bair countered a lay-up by Swarthmore's Elle Larson for an 18-15 lead. Larson hit a free throw and Jessica Jowdy scored to pull the Garnet even at the 5:19 mark.
Williamson put Dickinson back on top before the Garnet scored back-to-back baskets to take the lead. Kelsey Walsh (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) scored off a great pass from Bair before a Jowdy free throw gave the visitors a slim, 23-22, edge at the break.
Larson started the second half with three straight buckets to stretch the margin to seven in the opening minute. Sophomore Mary Martin (Honesdale, Pa./Honesdale) hit a free throw and scored off a pair of assists from Walsh to put the Devils in front, 31-29, with 13:57 remaining.
Larson countered but sophomore Helen Roberts (Oakton, Va./Oakton) buried a three-pointer and then scored and was fouled on a beautiful runner on a fast break. She hit the foul shot and first-year Mackenzie Skerritt (Hightstown, N.J./The Peddie School) knocked-down a jumper to give Dickinson its largest lead, 39-31, with 10:49 left to play.
Swarthmore chipped away, cutting the deficit to one before a three-point play from Williamson made the score, 42-38, with just under five minutes to play. After another basket by first-year Kassidy Lesher (Shoemakersville, Pa./Hamburg), Larson made a strong move in the paint and Melanie Ackerman buried a three-pointer to pull the Garnet within one.
Ackerman came up big once again, hitting another three-pointer to put Swarthmore in front, 46-44, with under two minutes remaining. Lesher grabbed an offensive rebound and tied the game at the 1:26 mark.
Larson converted one of two free throws with just seven seconds left to play for a one-point advantage. The coaches played some chess, and after three combined timeouts, it was time for Williamson to go to work. Roberts found Williamson on the left wing and she drove to the basket, laying the ball in with just 0.9 seconds on the clock.
Swarthmore called timeout but were unable to get a shot off on the in-bounds pass as Dickinson held on for a thrilling 48-47 win.
Williamson led the Red Devils with 12 points, three rebounds and three steals, going 4-for-7 from the free throw line. Lesher controlled a team-high eight rebounds, adding four points and a pair of steals. Martin tallied nine points, five rebounds, two steals and blocked shot. Bair and Roberts each finished with six points while Bair handed out three assists as well.
Larson led Swarthmore (5-12, 2-8) with a double-double, scoring game-highs of 26 points and 16 rebounds.
The Red Devils improve to 4-12 overall and 2-10 in the Centennial Conference. They are home again on Tuesday, hosting Elizabethtown College at 7:00 pm.
