(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson women's basketball team faced a hot shooting Elizabethtown team on Tuesday night, falling in non-conference action, 59-34, as the Blue Jays improved to 13-4 on the season.
The Blue Jays jumped out to an early 12-0 lead, hitting 6-of-7 shots to start the game. First-year Kassidy Lesher (Shoemakersville, Pa./Hamburg) put the Devils on the board with a pair of free throws at the 16:27 mark.
Lesher added a lay-up and made a steal, leading to back-to-back three-pointers from sophomores Ellen Bair (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg) and Helen Roberts (Oakton, Va./Oakton) to cut the lead to 15-10.
Rachel Forjan capped an 11-2 Blue Jay run with a three-pointer to put Elizabethtown in front, 26-12, with 6:24 to play in the first half.
The Red Devils knocked down five free throws in the closing minutes. Lesher pulled down and offensive rebound and was fouled with 26 seconds remaining. She hit both before Morgan Thomas closed out the half with a three-point play, putting the Blue Jays up, 36-17, at the break.
The Red Devils struggled on the offensive end to open the second half as Elizabethtown built the lead to 49-20 at the midpoint of the second half. Lesher hit a jumper in the lane off a nice dish from sophomore Jenny Smith (Short Hills, N.J./Millburn) to jump start the offense for the Devils.
Mary Martin (Honesdale, Pa./Honesdale) put-back an offensive rebound and scored off a steal before Myonie Williamson (Newtown Square, Pa./Radnor) came on to bury a jumper and make a strong move to the hoop for a lay-up.
The Blue Jays were able to match shots with the Devils and maintain the lead throughout the second half to win their 13th of the season.
The Red Devils were tenacious on defense as seven different players combined for eight blocked shots on the night, led by Mackenzie Skerritt (Hightstown, N.J./The Peddie School) with a pair.
Lesher led the way with nine points and a game-high 10 rebounds, going 5-for-6 from the line. Bair tallied seven points and four rebounds while Martin finished with six points, six rebounds and two steals. Roberts added five points and four rebounds.
Taylor Alwine led Elizabethtown with 11 points while Emily Martin finished with eight points and five rebounds.
The Red Devils (4-13) are on the road on Thursday, traveling to Muhlenberg College for a 7:00 pm tip-off. They return home to face Washington College on Saturday at 2:00 pm.
