(Allentown, Pa.) – The Muhlenberg College women's basketball team extended its win streak to nine games, but Dickinson gave the Mules a run for their money on Thursday night. The Red Devils shot an impressive 43 percent from the field, knocking down seven three-pointers on the night. Muhlenberg hit 13-of-14 free throws in the final minutes to claim a 79-67 decision.
The teams went back-and-forth with Muhlenberg leading, 11-8, at the 13:30 mark. Sophomore Helen Roberts (Oakton, Va./Oakton) tied the game with a three-pointer and later knocked down a jumper to pull the Devils within one.
Classmate Mary Martin (Honesdale, Pa./Honesdale) put the Devils on top, 17-16, with 9:15 remaining in the half. Muhlenberg countered with an 8-0 run before first-year Myonie Williamson (Newtown Square, Pa./Radnor) scored back-to-back field-goals to pull Dickinson within three.
The Mules stretched the lead to 11, with just under two minutes remaining. First-year Kassidy Lesher (Shoemakersville, Pa./Hamburg) hit a pair of free throws and classmate Ashleigh Williams (Lewistown, Pa./Mifflin County) buried a three-pointer and hit a free throw to pull the Devils within eight at halftime.
Lesher scored the first two baskets for the Devils to open the second half. Sophomore Sam Kennedy (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) came alive to lead a Red Devil run. She hit a pair of jumpers and knocked down two three-pointers to knot the game at 43-43, with 13:02 remaining in the game.
Hannah Rush countered with a three-pointer but Ellen Bair (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg) answered from long range and Williamson scored off her own steal to put Dickinson on top, 48-46.
The Mules stretched the margin to six, but Roberts cut the lead in half with a three-pointer at the 5:47 mark. Bair scored to keep the Devils within four, with 3:46 on the clock. Muhlenberg was able to pull away with strong free throw shooting.
Roberts hit another three-pointer aand dished out an assist to Kennedy, but the Mules were able to hold the lead down the stretch as they hit 13-of-14 free throws in the final three minutes.
Kennedy led the Red Devils with 18 points, scoring 14 in the second half. Roberts scored 11 points on 3-of-5 shooting from beyond the arc.
Lesher had her second straight career-high, pulling down a game-high 14 rebounds to go with eight points on the night. She pulled down seven on the offensive end and added two assists and a pair of blocked shots. Bair and Williamson each finished with nine points.
Leanna Tammany had a huge night for the Mules (12-5, 11-2), scoring 35 points behind a 17-for-18 performance from the free throw line. Laura Gregory had a double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds.
The Red Devils slip to 4-14 overall and 2-11 in the Centennial Conference. They return home to face Washington College on Saturday. Tip-off is set for 2:00 pm.
