Free Throw Shooting Leads Washington Past Devils

(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson women's basketball team had a tough outing on Saturday, falling to visiting Washington College, 63-45. The Shorewomen converted 17-of-20 free throws, all in the second half, while shooting a solid 42 percent from the field.

 

Washington jumped out to a 10-3 lead and stretched the margin to 14-5, with just under 12 minutes remaining on the first half. The Red Devils countered with a 6-0 run, triggered by a rebound and put-back from first-year Mackenzie Skerritt (Hightstown, N.J./The Peddie School).

 

First-year Ashleigh Williams (Lewistown, Pa./Mifflin County) came on to knock down a three-pointer and score off a rebound to pull Dickinson within three, 20-17, with 6:13 remaining in the half.

 

Ellen Bair (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg) hit a pair of free throws and fed Helen Roberts (Oakton, Va./Oakton) for a three-pointer at the buzzer to cut the Washington lead to just on at halftime, 27-26.

 

The Red Devils battled to start the second half. First-year Myonie Williamson (Newtown Square, Pa./Radnor) buried a three-pointer to tie the game and Bair put Dickinson on top, 38-37, with 12:41 remaining in the game.

 

Washington answered with a three-pointer from Kelly Sugalski and held a four point advantage at the 6:45 mark. Solid free throw shooting allowed the Shorewomen to continue to build on the lead, led by sophomore guard Ali Gundy.

 

Bair led the Red Devils with 12 points and four rebounds, hitting 8-of-10 free throws on the day. Sophomore Mary Martin (Honesdale, Pa./Honesdale) controlled a game-high 10 rebounds, adding four points and three steals. Roberts turned in another strong performance, scoring seven points and controlling six rebounds to go with a pair of assists and two steals. Mairead Donahue (Turmball, Conn./St. Joseph) chipped in with four points and six rebounds.

 

Carley Kendall led Washington (6-13, 2-10) with a game-high 26 points, hitting 7-of-8 free throws.

 

The Red Devils slip to 4-15 overall and 2-12 in the Centennial Conference. They are on the road on Wednesday, traveling to Gettysburg College for a 6:00 pm tip-off.
