Strong Second Half Not Enough for Devils

(Chestertown, Md.) – The Dickinson women's basketball team had a tough night shooting at Washington College, falling 65-47 on Wednesday night. The Red Devils outscored the Shorewomen in the second half, but were unable to make up a first half deficit.

 

The Shorewomen jumped out to a 13-5 advantage after Jackie O'Connell opened the game with a three-pointer. Mary Martin (Honesdale, Pa./Honesdale) put the Devils on the board with a pair of free throws before Washington went on an 8-0 run.

 

Junior Sam Kennedy (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) hit a three-pointer to stop the run, cutting the deficit to 11-5. Emily Hubley scored and converted a free throw and Kennedy sank another jumper at the 9:01 mark.

 

After Myonie Williamson (Newtown Square, Pa./Radnor) hit a pair of free throws, the Shorewomen scored seven straight to lead 21-9, with 5:10 remaining in the half. Kennedy knocked down another three-pointer.

 

Drew Arnett hit a three-pointer for Washington and closed out the half with an 11-4 run to lead 35-16 at the break.

 

The Red Devils hit 8-of-9 free throws in the first half while Kennedy went 3-for-5 from the field, but picked-up three fouls as well.

 

Washington opened the second half with a 9-2 run, stretching the lead to 44-18. Ellen Bair (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg) hustled for a rebound and scored for the Devils. They held on defense and crashed the boards, grabbing three offensive rebounds with Williamson scoring and drawing a foul.

 

Kennedy drew her fourth foul at the 14 minute mark. A free throw and a foul line jumper put Washington in front, 47-23. Williamson added a free throw and Kassidy Lesher (Showmakersville, Pa./Hamburg) scored on a rebound. Williamson caught a great pass from Kelsey Walsh (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) and scored while being fouled once again. Williamson missed the free throw but the Devils controlled the rebound.

 

Williamson drew another foul but couldn't cut into the deficit. Ali Grundy sank a three-pointer for Washington and Williamson quickly scored on the other end to make the score, 50-30, at the midpoint of the half.

 

Williamson buried a three to cut the lead to 52-35. Bair added a three-pointer as well, but Washington would go on a 10-3 run to stretch the margin to 62-41.

 

Helen Roberts (Oakton, Va./Oakton) came on to knock down a three-pointer. She finished on a nice pass from Liz Schultz (Dunmore, Pa./Scranton Prep) and drew a foul. She hit the free throw for the final score of 65-47.

 

Williamson finished with 13 points to lead the Red Devils. Kennedy tallied eight points, three rebounds and a pair of blocked shots. Martin hit 5-of-6 free throws and controlled eight rebounds, grabbing four on the offensive end. Schultz and Lesher combined for 11 rebounds.

 

Four players reached double-figures for Washington as they improve to 5-7 overall and 1-4 in the Centennial Conference. Carly Kendall led the way with 17 points and eight rebounds.

 

The Red Devils outscored Washington, 31-30, in the second half and finished 14-for-20 from the line.


The Red Devils slip to 3-8 and 1-6 in the CC. They return home to face Ursinus College on Saturday at 2:00 pm.
