Box Score (Ithaca, N.Y.) – The Dickinson women's basketball team held off a late rally from Bard College to win the consolation game of the Ithaca Invitational, 60-52, on Saturday afternoon.
The Red Devils came out strong, jumping out to a 9-0 lead. Sophomore Mary Martin (Honesdale, Pa./Honesdale) scored three field-goals in the early run while Helen Roberts (Oakton, Va./Oakton) added a basket and an assist.
Bard settled in and went on a run of their own, closing the gap to one at 12-11 behind a pair of three-pointers from Binka Bell.
Roberts knocked down a three-pointer at the 1:55 mark and senior Sam Kennedy (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) made a nice cut to the basket to give Dickinson a 17-12 advantage at the end of the first quarter.
Mairead Donahue (Trumball, Conn./St. Joseph's) hit a nice mid-range jumper from the left wing to stretch the lead to seven. Bard answered with a foul line jumper on the other end and forced a turnover to pull within three. The Red Devils scored on three straight possessions before Elena LeFevre drove to the hoop for a lay-up as the Devils held a 25-18 lead with 6:30 to play in the half.
Martin and Roberts led the way as the Devils closed out the half with a strong run. First-year Jackie Joyce (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) buried a three-pointer off an assist from Martin to give Dickinson a 35-20 lead at the break.
Bard started off the second half with an 8-0 run and Bell cut the deficit to just six with another three-pointer at the 5:52 mark of the third. The Red Devils put together an 8-3 run to stretch the lead to 45-34, with 1:18 to play in the quarter.
The Red Devils held a nine point advantage heading into the final period. Martin started off the fourth with back-to-back field-goals to put Dickinson in front by 13.
The Raptors tried to rally, cutting the lead to seven with 4:27 left to play. Kennedy dropped a dagger, hitting a three-pointer for a double-digit lead. Bard kept things interesting with a steal and a three-point play to pull within six, with just 20 seconds remaining.
Roberts converted a pair of free throws in the final seconds for the final of 60-52.
Roberts led the Devils with 16 points and three assists while Martin tallied 15 points and handed out four assists and adding three steals. Kennedy reached double-figures with 11 points to go with a pair of assists and three steals.
Sophomore Kassidy Lesher (Shoemakersville, Pa./Hamburg) dominated the boards with a game-high 11 rebounds, including five on the offensive end. She added four points, two assists, two steals and a pair of blocked shots.
Tytravia Riley led Bard with 19 points and six rebounds as the Raptors fall to 2-2 on the season.
The Red Devils improve to 3-1 on the year. They open Centennial Conference play in Saturday, traveling to McDaniel College for a 6:00 pm tip-off.
