Box Score (Westminster, Md.) – The Dickinson women's basketball team got out to a great start against preseason Centennial Conference favorite McDaniel College on Tuesday night. The Red Devils were even after the first quarter and made a late run at the end before suffering a 48-38 setback.
Mary Martin (Honesdale, Pa./Honesdale) scored five points to lead the Devils as they traded baskets with McDaniel for an 11-11 tie at the end of the first quarter.
Lindsey Zwecker (Atlanta, Ga./Pace Academy) put the Devils up, 11-9, with a put-back rebound at the 2:00 minute mark. She blocked a shot on the other end, but McDaniel grabbed the rebound and tied the game in the final minute.
The Green Terror capitalized on another offensive rebound as Dougherty drew a foul with two seconds remaining, but could not convert the free throws, send the game into the second quarter, tied at 11.
Lindsey Nichols scored a quick five points around a pair of Red Devil turnovers to put the Terror on top, 16-11, early in the second quarter.
Martin answered with a jumper in the lane to stop the short run, but back-to-back field-goals stretched the lead to 20-13, at the six minute mark.
Mairead Donahue (Trumball, Conn./St. Joseph's) came on and quickly grabbed a pair of rebounds.
Turnovers continued to hurt the Devils as Sarah Bach made a steal and a lay-up for a 22-13 advantage. Three offensive rebounds led to a jumper for Ekertereni Tsomos to give McDaniel a double-digit lead, with 3:03 remaining in the first half.
Carly Zaps made it a 13 point lead before Mackenzie Skerritt (Hightstown, N.J./The Peddie School) quickly answered on the other end. Nichols hit a pair of free throws to make the score, 28-15, at the break.
Nichols opened the second half with a lay-up, scoring off a steal and assist from Jasmine Smith.
Sam Kennedy (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) converted a pair of free throws to make the score, 30-17, to begin the second half.
Kassidy Lesher (Shoemakersville, Pa./Hamburg) grabbed a rebound and a quick outlet led to a fast break basket for Kennedy.
Bang-band fouls sent Martin to the bench with four fouls at the seven minute mark of the third. The Devils showed well on the boards as they looked to chip away at the lead.
Halie Burgess knocked down a three-pointer to extend the margin to 33-19. The Green Terror crashed the boards, getting three chances but the Red Devils held on defense to gain possession at the 4:01 mark.
Lesher hit a foul line jumper to beat the shot clock with just over two minutes to play in the quarter. Nichols drew a pair of late free throws, but this time hit both to put McDaniel up, 36-21. Lesher countered with a nice reverse lay-up, off a nice dish from Helen Roberts (Oakton, Va./Oakton).
Smith hit a jumper and Skerritt beat the buzzer with a three-pointer to end the quarter with McDaniel holding a 38-26 lead.
Lesher grabbed a big offensive rebound and fed a nice pass to Kennedy, who was fouled. She hit one of two free throws to cut the deficit to 11, in the opening minute of the fourth quarter.
Smith and Kennedy traded lay-ups as Kennedy made a nice head fake to score on a base line drive.
Skerritt buried a three-pointer from the corner to make the score, 42-32, at the six minute mark. She fed a nice lob to Lesher for an easy lay-up to cut the lead to eight.
Lesher and Roberts came away with defensive rebounds and Kennedy hit a baseline jumper to pull Dickinson within six before Nichols hit to make it 44-36, with 3:27 to play in the game.
Smith made a steal and scored for a 10 point advantage. McDaniel gained possession on a rebound but the Devils came up with a steal and Kennedy drew a foul and cut the lead to 46-38.
Brittany Davis added a final basket for the final of 48-38, The Red Devils forced a pair of turnovers in the final seconds but were unable to cut into the deficit.
Kennedy led the Red Devils with 13 points and three steals, hitting 5-of-6 free throws on the night. Skerritt hit a pair of three-pointers, scoring eight points and controlling four rebounds. Lesher grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds to go with six points while Martin finished with seven points and Donahue tallied five rebounds.
The Green Terror improve to 4-1 on the season and start 1-0 in the Centennial Conference. The Red Devils slip to 3-2 overall and 0-1 in the CC. The Red Devils return to Carlisle for their home opener next Tuesday, hosting Gettysburg College at 6:00 pm.
