Box Score (Haverford, Pa.) – The Dickinson women's basketball team won its fourth straight, sweeping the season series with a 53-44 win at Haverford College on Saturday.
Junior Mary Martin (Honesdale, Pa./Honesdale) put the Devils on the board in the opening minute before the hosts rattled off nine straight points. Senior Sam Kennedy (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) dished out back-to-back assists, feeding Mairead Donahue (Trumbull, Conn./St. Joseph) for a short jumper and then Helen Roberts (Oakton, Va./Oakton) for a three-pointer.
Sophomore Kassidy Lesher (Shoemakersville, Pa./Hamburg) tied the game and then put the Devils on top with a pair of free throws. Olivia Walsh hit jumper in the final minute to tie the game at the end of the quarter.
Martin and Roberts combined to give the Red Devils a 19-13 advantage in the second quarter. The 'Fords answered with a 7-0 run to take a brief lead at the 1:34 mark. First-year Jonica Brown (Mohnton, Pa./The Hill School) closed out the half with an offensive rebound and score to put Dickinson in front, 21-20, at halftime.
Haverford scored in its opening possession of the second half, but first-year Jackie Joyce (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) knocked down back-to-back three-pointers and Martin scored off a steal to give the Devils a 29-22 lead with 6:33 to play in the third.
Olivia Walsh broke up the run but Joyce would come back with another three-pointer and a jumper to stretch the margin to 10. The Devils outscored the 'Fords 17-7 in the third to lead, 38-27, heading into the final period.
The Red Devils continued to attack to open the fourth as Roberts hit a three-pointer and Marting converted a pair of free throws to give Dickinson a 43-29 lead with 8:14 to play in the game.
Katie Cook cut the lead to single digits with a three-pointer at the 3:01 mark. Joyce put the Devils back on top by 11 with 1:37 remaining. Lesher and Joyce each added a free throw in the final minute and Walsh scored in the final seconds for the final of 53-44.
Samantha Wetzel led Haverford (8-6, 3-4 CC) with 13 points and five blocked shots while Walsh and Cook finished with 12 and 11, respectively.
Joyce led the Devils with a game-high 17 points, hitting a trio of three-pointers and going 4-for-4 from the free throw line. Martin and Roberts each reached double-figures with 11 points. They both added four rebounds while Roberts blocked a pair of shots and Martin tallied two steals. Lesher turned in another strong performance on the boards, controlling a game-high 13 rebounds to go with six points and a pair of assists.
The Red Devils won their fourth straight Centennial Conference match-up to improve to 8-6 overall and 5-4 in conference play. They return home to face Johns Hopkins University on Wednesday night at 6:00 pm.
