Red Devils Handle Hopkins for Fifth Straight Win

Box Score

(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson women's basketball team extended its midseason winning streak to five straight, turning back visiting Johns Hopkins University, 48-42, on Wednesday night.

The Blue Jays took an early 3-0 lead before senior Sam Kennedy (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) came on and knocked down a three-pointer to tie the game. Junior Helen Roberts (Oakton, Va./Oakton) hit a three-pointer and a jumper to put Dickinson in front, 10-5.

Hopkins rallied to pull even at the end of the first quarter, tying the game 12-12.

First-year Jonica Brown (Mohnton, Pa./The Hill School) started off the second quarter with a three-pointer. The Blue Jays countered with back-to-back scores and the teams would trade baskets to an 18-18 tie with 4:14 remaining in the half.

Hopkins pulled in front by four but the Devils cut the deficit to a point behind a field-goal from Mary Martin (Honesdale, Pa./Honesdale) and a late free throw by sophomore Kassidy Lesher (Shoemakersville, Pa./Hamburg), making the score 22-21 at halftime.

The Blue Jays came out of the break on fire, jumping out to a 30-22 advantage. Martin and Kennedy led the charge as Dickinson cut the margin to 30-28, with 3:33 to play in the third period. Mairead Donahue (Trumbull, Conn./St. Joseph) sandwiched a pair of perimeter jumpers around a strong move by Lesher to tie the game, 34-34.

Sophie Way answered for Hopkins before the Devils closed out the quarter with a nice steal and give-and-go between Kennedy and Martin to send the game into the fourth quarter with the score tied at 36.

The back-and-forth battle continued into the final quarter. Lesher broke a 40-40 tie with a pair of free throws at the 4:10 mark. Katie Clark hit one-of-two from the line and Roberts knocked down a foul line jumper to give the Devils a 44-41 cushion.

Martin grabbed a defensive rebound and put-back a lay-up on the other end to stretch the lead to five, with 1:17 remaining. Way added a free throw while Martin and Roberts each tallied once from the line to give the Red Devils the 48-42 win.

The Red Devils did not allow a Blue Jay to reach double-figures. Rachel Cook led Hopkins (6-9, 4-5 CC) with eight points and game-high 13 rebounds.

Martin almost recorded a double-double, scoring 12 points to go with eight rebounds and three steals. Roberts scored 10 points, adding five rebounds, four assists and two steals. Kennedy hit for nine points and had four steals while Lesher finished with nine rebounds and five points. Donahue was solid once again, recording six points, two assists, two blocks and a steal.

The Red Devils held an 18-8 advantage off turnovers and outscored the Blue Jays 21-13 off the bench. They improve to 9-6 overall and 6-4 in the Centennial Conference. The Red Devils are home again on Saturday, hosting Muhlenberg College at 2:00 pm.
