Box Score (Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson women's basketball team turned in a great performance in its first home contest of 2016, outscoring visiting Washington College, 32-16 in the second half to post a 65-43, Centennial Conference win on Saturday afternoon in the Kline Center.
Sophomore forward Kassidy Lesher (Shoemakersville, Pa./Hamburg) led a balanced offensive attack with a double-double, scoring 11 points and controlling 10 rebounds. Junior Helen Roberts (Oakton, Va./Oakton) moved into the top 10 for career three-pointers, hitting three for a game-high 17 points. She had knocked down 58 triples in her career to rank 10th on the school all-time list.
Washington scored first before the Red Devils jumped out to a 9-3 lead. The Shorewomen answered with a 7-0 run to take a brief lead with Dickinson holding a 13-12 advantage at the end of the first quarter.
The teams traded baskets throughout the second quarter. Lesher made a strong moved inside for a lay-up and then fed Mary Martin (Honesdale, Pa./Honesdale) to give Dickinson a 20-19 lead at the six minute mark.
The Red Devils closed out the half with a strong, 10-3 run, to take a 33-27 lead at halftime. The Devils tallied 14 points off turnovers and held a 14-0 advantage on second chance points with a 25-16 edge in rebounds.
Ali Grundy hit a three-pointer for Washington to start the second half. Dickinson used three free throws and a three-pointer from sophomore Mackenzie Skerritt (Hightstown, N.J./The Peddie School) to extend the lead to 39-30, with 4:54 to play in the third quarter.
Sophomore Mairead Donahue (Trumball, Conn./St. Joseph) closed out the third quarter with a solid performance, scoring a pair of field-goals, grabbing two rebounds and blocking a big shot on the other end.
The Red Devils led 45-32 at the end of the third quarter. They continued to build on the lead to start the fourth as first-year Jonica Brown (Pottstown, Pa./The Hill School) and Skerritt each hit a three-pointer to extend the margin to 51-32.
The Shorewomen looked to make a run, cutting the deficit to 53-40 before Roberts buried another three-point dagger with 5:21 left to play. Jackie Joyce (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) sank a late three-pointer, the Devils' eighth of the game for the final of 65-43.
Grundy led Washington (3-7, 0-4 CC) with 12 points while Katherine Moore tallied a team-high nine rebounds.
Martin added 12 points, six rebounds and five steals while Skerritt was on her way to a double-double with nine points and seven rebounds. Skerritt added three assists and three steals as well.
The Red Devils improve to 5-6 overall and 2-4 in the Centennial Conference. They are home again on Tuesday night, hosting conference front-runner Ursinus College at 6:00 pm.
