Red Devils Roll Past Hopkins for 8-1 Start

Box Score

(Baltimore, Md.) – The Dickinson women's basketball team continued its strong start, improving to 8-1 overall with a solid road win at Johns Hopkins University on Saturday afternoon. The Red Devils opened up a 41-26 lead at halftime and went on to post a 72-58 victory, remaining unbeaten in the Centennial Conference at 5-0.

The Red Devils had another strong start behind the play of senior Mary Martin (Honesdale, Pa./Honesdale) and first-year Hannah Heiring (Wayzata, Minn./Wayzata), taking an 18-13 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Martin played well in the paint while Heiring knocked down a pair of three-pointers in the opening stanza. Heiring triggered a 10-0 run in the second quarter with a three-pointer and senior Helen Roberts (Oakton, Va./Oakton) hit a three on the back end to stretch the lead to 28-16, with 7:17 to play in the half.

Roberts buried another three-pointer with Jennifer Smith (Short Hills, N.J./Millburn) and Mackenzie Skerritt (Hightstown, N.J./The Peddie School) finishing the half strong to put the Devils up by 15 at the break, 41-26.

Dickinson would build the lead to as many as 20 in the third quarter and held a double-digit advantage throughout the second half. Roberts sank two more three-pointers in the third with Martin and junior forward Kassidy Lesher (Shoemakersville, Pa./Hamburg) controlling the action in the paint and on the boards.

Hopkins finished the quarter with a three-pointer and a pair of free throws to cut the deficit to, 57-42, heading into the fourth. Roberts and Martin combined to put Dickinson up by 19, early in the final period before a late run by the Blue Jays pulled them within 10.

The Red Devils were running out of shot-clock with just over a minute to play when a heads-up timeout by head coach Katherine Bixby saved the possession. With just two seconds to get a shot off, the Devils went to Roberts who buried a long three-pointer for a 68-55 advantage.

Lesher and Roberts would both hit free throws to counter a three-pointer from Lillian Scott for final of 72-58.

Roberts final free throws gave her a game-high 19 points as she hit five three-pointers and added three assists on the day. Martin tallied 17 points and grabbed eight rebounds, hitting 7-of-11 shots from the floor.

Lesher, who entered the game ranked sixth in the nation in rebounds per game, was just under her average with a game-high 13, scoring nine points and handing out three assists as well. Heiring has hit her last seven three-pointers, going 4-for-4 against the Blue Jays. She scored 14 points on 5-of-6 shooting to go with three rebounds and three blocked shots.

Mairead Donahue (Trumbull, Conn./St. Joseph) was 3-for-3 with six points and Skerritt tallied six rebounds, three points and two steals.

Scott led the Blue Jays with 15 points and five steals as they fall to 4-5 overall and 3-3 in the Centennial Conference.

The Red Devils (8-1, 5-0 CC) return to action on January 3rd with a 7:00 pm tip-off at Messiah College.
