Red Devils Show Depth to Remain Unbeaten in CC

Box Score

(Swarthmore, Pa.) – Coming off three straight overtime wins, including a triple-overtime thriller on Thursday night, the Dickinson women's basketball team would need some depth in Saturday's Centennial Conference match-up at Swarthmore. The Red Devils used an overall team effort to roll past the Garnet, 72-51, to remain unbeaten in the CC with a 3-0 start.

Dickinson outlasted Muhlenberg, 74-71, in the longest game in conference history on Thursday night, holding off the Mules in triple-overtime after surviving an extra-frame affair at McDaniel on Tuesday.

The Garnet struck first but Dickinson answered to take a 9-4 lead on a three-pointer from senior guard Helen Roberts (Oakton, Va./Oakton) at the 5:55 mark.

Swarthmore pulled even before the Red Devils closed out the first quarter with a 16-11 advantage behind another three-pointer from sophomore Jonica Brown (Mohnton, Pa./The Hill School).

The Red Devils used a 9-2 run to open the second quarter, stretching their lead to 25-13, with 6:47 remaining in the half. First-year Hannah Heiring (Wayzata, Minn./Wayzata) knocked-down a three-pointer to extend the margin to 37-20, at the 1:34 mark.

First-year Emily Padalino (West Sand Lake, N.Y./Albany Academy) hit a couple of nice jump shots in the second quarter while junior Mairead Donahue (Trumbull, Conn./St. Joseph) gave the Devils strong minutes as well.

Senior Jennifer Smith (Short Hills, N.J./Millburn) hit a pair of free throws and late jumper to give Dickinson a 41-22 lead at halftime.

Heiring buried back-to-back three-pointers to start the second half, matching an early push from Swarthmore. Junior Kassidy Lesher (Shoemakersville, Pa./Hamburg), coming off a 20-20 double-double on Tuesday, took control of the paint, working her way to the free throw line and extending the Devil advantage to 51-29, at the mid-point of the quarter.

First-year Lauren McBride (Trenton, N.J./St. Gill Bernard's) gave the Devils an offensive burst at the end of the third as they pulled in front, 57-41, heading into the final period.

Senior Mary Martin (Honesdale, Pa./Honesdale) was just shy of a second straight double-double with nine points and eight rebounds. She started the fourth with a three-point play and later put the Devils up, 66-44, hitting back-to-back jumpers. The Devils finished with a field-goal from Donahue and two free throws from Padalino for the final of 72-51.

Lesher led the way with 14 points and nine rebounds, adding a pair of steals and two blocks. She was 5-for-6 from the field and 4-of-6 from the free throw line. Heiring finished 3-for-6 from beyond the arc, scoring 13 points on the afternoon.

Martin added five assists and three steals to her nine points and eight rebounds. Roberts hit for nine points with Smith netting seven points while McBride chipped in with five points and four rebounds. Donohue finished with six points as well and Kelsey Walsh (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) handed out four assists.

The Red Devils improve to 6-1 overall and remain unbeaten in the Centennial Conference with a 3-0 start. They return home to host Gettysburg College on Wednesday night at 6:00 pm.
