Box Score (Gettysburg, Pa.) – The Dickinson women's basketball team played almost dead even with host Gettysburg for the final three quarters of the game, but a tough start in the first led to a 53-42 win for the Bullets on Wednesday night.
The Bullets struck first and hit a pair of jump shots for an early 6-4 lead. Junior Mary Martin (Honesdale, Pa./Honesdale) drove in for back-to-back lay-ups for the Red Devils.
Emma Dorshimer knocked down a three-pointer before Martin answered with a foul line jumper for a 9-6 Bullet lead, with just under six minutes to play in the first quarter.
Gettysburg controlled the offensive boards and built the lead to 18-6 on another three-pointer from Dorshimer and a lay-up by Jessica Porter to close out the opening period.
Kassidy Lesher (Shoemakersville, Pa./Hamburg) went 3-for-4 from the line to start the second quarter, drawing a pair of early fouls on the Bullets.
Martin made a steal and blocked a shot, and Sam Kennedy (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) buried a three-pointer to cut the deficit to 20-12. The Devils had good possessions but couldn't get any shots to fall while Gettysburg converted back-to-back lay-ups to extend the lead to 24-12.
Martin dropped a nice feed to a cutting Lesher to break up the run at the 5:40 mark. Dickinson made a couple of strong defensive stands with Martin scoring nine of the Devils' first 17 points.
Gettysburg finally answered before Helen Roberts (Oakton, Va./Oakton) dished a nice pass to Lesher to make the score 27-19. The Bullets tallied three straight field-goals for a 31-19 advantage, with 1:31 to play in the first half.
The hosts would take a 33-19 lead into the break as Dorshimer closed out the scoring with 56 seconds on the clock. Dickinson won the quarter, 15-13, while the Bullets had 11 points come from off the bench.
Martin scored early and Roberts sandwiched a lay-up around a pair of Dorshimer free throws to start the second half. Sophomore Mackenzie Skerritt (Hightstown, N.J./The Peddie School) knocked down a three-pointer to make it a 10-point game with 5:38 remaining in the third.
The Bullets edged Dickinson just 10-9 in the quarter, holding a 42-29 advantage. Gettysburg banged a three-pointer to start the fourth and led 49-31, with just over six minutes to play.
The Red Devils looked to make a run as Roberts scored and Kennedy buried a three-pointer. Dickinson cut the deficit to single-digits as Martin fed Kennedy for another score and knocked down a jumper with two minutes remaining in regulation.
Emily Gibbons broke up the run with an assist from Kim Ryan. Emily Duggan capitalized with a basket on a turnover before Mairead Donahue (Trumbull, Conn./St. Joseph) scored for the final of 53-42.
Dorshimer led Gettysburg (16-5, 10-5 CC) with 12 points and nine rebounds while Anne Reilly tallied seven points, 11 rebounds and five blocked shots on the night.
Martin led the Red Devils with a game-high 14 points to go with seven rebounds, three assists and four steals. Lesher was again dominant on the boards, controlling a game-high 14 rebounds to go with seven points and a pair of blocked shots.
Kennedy added eight points while Donahue grabbed five rebounds and made a pair of steals.
The Red Devils slip to 12-9 overall and 8-7 in the Centennial Conference. They return home for Senior Day Saturday, hosting Swarthmore College at 2:00 pm.
