Balanced Offense Leads Devils Past Washington

(Chestertown, Md.) – The Dickinson women's basketball team posted its 12th win of the season and improved to 8-5 in Centennial Conference play with a 71-57 road-win at Washington College on Saturday afternoon.

The Red Devils jumped out to 7-0 lead and stretched it to 11-2 before the Shorewomen stormed back to tie the game. Mary Martin (Honesdale, Pa./Honesdale) and Kelsey Walsh (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) traded assists while Martin grabbed a pair of rebounds to lead the Devils on an 8-0 run to end the first quarter, on top 19-11.

Lindsey Zwecker (Atlanta, Ga./Pace Academy) scored first to open the second quarter, stretching the lead to double-figures. Helen Roberts (Oakton, Va./Oakton) hit a pair of free throws and finished a lay-up from Martin, and Jennifer Smith (Short Hills, N.J./Millburn) scored to give Dickinson a 29-15 advantage, with just under a minute to play.

The Red Devils led 29-18, at halftime, outscoring the hosts 20-2 in the paint. Sophomore Mackenzie Skerritt (Hightstown, N.J./The Peddie School) knocked down a three-pointer on the Devils' first possession of the second half. Roberts buried back-to-back triples to extend the margin to 20, with 8:02 remaining in the third, forcing an early Washington timeout.

The Shorewomen countered with three-pointers from Gabby Winsky and Ali Grundy, and a pair of free throws to cut the deficit to 12. The Devils answered with an 11-0 run, capped by a three from Skerritt and a jumper by Mairead Donahue (Trumbull, Conn./St. Joseph).

The Devils led by 20 at the end of the third quarter, and led 60-38 with 5:52 remaining, led by strong play from senior Sam Kennedy (Chatham, N.J./Chatham).

Washington tried to chip away at the lead in the final four minutes, cutting the deficit to as little as 10. Smith would hit 7-of-10 free throws down the stretch to help secure the win for the Red Devils.

Grundy led Washington (3-17, 0-14 CC) with 17 points and eight assists.

Roberts led the Devils with 16 points, hitting 5-of-7 shots and 4-of-4 free throws to go with a pair of assists. Smith tallied 11 points, six rebounds and four assists while Martin grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds, adding eight points, six assists and a steal.

Kassidy Lesher (Shoemakersville, Pa./Hamburg) tallied five points and six rebounds. Kennedy finished with nine points with Jackie Joyce (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) controlling eight rebounds and Donahue netting six.

The Red Devils (12-7, 8-5 CC) return home to face Muhlenberg College on Monday night. Opening tip-off is set for 6:00 pm.
