Box Score (Carlisle, Pa.) – Visiting Johns Hopkins University jumped out to an early lead held it for the duration to post a 68-48 win over Dickinson in Centennial Conference women's basketball action on Tuesday night.
The Blue Jays used a page from the Red Devil playbook, knocking down a pair of quick three-pointers to take an 8-0 lead. They added two more as they stretched the margin to 14-4 at the 6:24 mark of the first quarter.
Senior Helen Roberts (Oakton, Va./Oakton) looked to get things started for the Red Devils, hitting a three-pointer before Hopkins countered with back-to-back scores off assists from Lexie Scholtz to stretch the lead to 11, with 3:42 remaining.
Senior Mary Martin (Honesdale, Pa./Honesdale) led the charge with five points and Kassidy Lesher (Shoemakersville, Pa./Hamburg) hit a pair of free throws to cut the deficit to four before Scholtz gave the Blue Jays a 22-16 advantage at the end of the first.
The Red Devils made another nice run in the second quarter to cut the margin to a field-goal on a Hannah Heiring (Wayzata, Minn./Wayzata) lay-up at the 4:21 mark. The Blue Jays were able to build the lead back to 10 at halftime, 34-24.
Dickinson looked to close the gap at the beginning of the third as Lesher sandwiched four points around a Roberts three-pointer to trail by five at the midpoint of the quarter. Hopkins was able to respond again, holding a 48-38 advantage, heading into the fourth.
The Blue Jays were able to keep the lead at double-figures throughout the fourth period, stretching the final margin with solid free throw shooting down the stretch. Lauren McBride (Trenton, N.J./St. Gill Bernard's) highlighted the final quarter with two strong moves to the basket for a pair of three-point plays.
Lillian Scott led Hopkins with a game-high 19 points and four assists, going 11-of-12 from the free throw line. The Blue Jays improve to 7-9 overall and 6-6 in the conference.
Lesher finished with a double-double, scoring 12 points while controlling a game-high 10 rebounds and recording three steals. McBride tallied 11 points and three rebounds, hitting 4-of-7 shots from the floor.
Martin scored nine points and had nine rebounds to go with three assists and three steals Roberts and Heiring each finished with six points and five rebounds.
The Red Devils slip to 12-5 overall and 9-3 in the conference. They are on the road on Thursday, traveling to Muhlenberg College for a 6:00 pm tip-off.
