Box Score (Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson women's basketball team went back-and-forth throughout the entire game with visiting Haverford College, going into overtime for the fourth time this season. The 'Fords would hang on in the end, handing the Devils' their first Centennial Conference loss of the season, 56-55. The game also marked the first overtime setback for Devils, who won three straight extra-frame contests, earlier this season.
Senior guard Helen Roberts (Oakton, Va./Oakton) opened the game with a three-pointer from the corner and hit two more in the first quarter to give the Red Devils a 14-12 advantage, at the first break.
Sophomore Jonica Brown (Mohnton, Pa./The Hill School) hit a three-pointer to start the second quarter, stretching the lead to five. Haverford rallied to pull in front before Roberts buried another triple to tie the game, 26-26, with 3:56 to play in the half.
Senior Mary Martin (Honesdale, Pa./Honesdale) put the Devils back on top, but Megan Furch closed out the half with back-to-back scores to put the visitors up, 30-28, at intermission.
Roberts banged a three-pointer to start the second half as well, finishing a nice feed from Mackenzie Skerritt (Hightstown, N.J./The Peddie School). First-year Lauren McBride (Trenton, N.J./Gill St. Bernard's) knocked down a jumper at the buzzer to give Dickinson a 40-39 lead, heading into the fourth period.
Haverford extended the margin to four points to start the fourth before Roberts answered with another triple. Martin tied the game with a jumper and senior Jennifer Smith (Short Hills, N.J./Millburn) put the Devils back in front, with just 2:12 to play in regulation.
Macy Goldbach scored with one minute to play and the 'Fords grabbed the rebound on the other end. They went to Goldbach again for the win, but junior Kassidy Lesher (Shoemakersville, Pa/Hamburg) came down with the rebound and Dickinson called timeout with just four seconds to play.
The Devils were unable to get a final look and the game went into overtime. Roberts hit a three-pointer to start things off once again, giving Dickinson a quick, three-point lead. Robert traded lay-ups with Goldbach, and the Goldbach hit a three to tie the game, 52-52.
Haverford was able to hold on two possessions, pulling in front, 56-52, with 1:36 on the clock. Roberts cut it to one with her eighth three-pointer of the game and then grabbed a rebound to keep the Devils alive. After a turnover, Roberts made a huge steal, but was off the mark with a desperation three-pointer at the buzzer.
Roberts went 8-for-11 from beyond the arc, just one shy of the school single-game record, scoring a career-high 28 points. She added six rebounds, three assists and three steals as well.
Samantha Wetzel led Haverford (6-4, 3-3) with a double-double, scoring 12 points and controlling 10 rebounds.
Lesher controlled 10 rebounds, scoring seven points while Martin tallied eight points and seven rebounds. Mairead Donahue (Trumbull, Conn./St. Joseph) gave the Devils solid minutes, adding three points, four rebounds and two blocked shots.
The Red Devils slip to 8-3 overall and 5-1 in the Centennial Conference. They travel to Bryn Mawr College on Tuesday night before returning home to face Ursinus College on Thursday.
