Box Score (Westminster, Md.) – The Dickinson women's basketball team came out strong at the beginning of each half, outscoring host McDaniel College, 14-0, to start the second on the way to a 72-60 win on Saturday.
The Red Devils gave the Green Terror an early wake-up call in the 11:00 am tip-off, jumping out to an 8-0 lead behind six quick points from junior Hannah Heiring (Wayzata, Minn./Wayzata).
McDaniel settled in and was able to pull even at the midpoint of the quarter. Junior Emily Padalino (West Sand Lake, N.Y./Albany Academy) hit a three-pointer and then converted a traditional three-point play as Dickinson took a 19-17 lead at the end of the first period.
First-year Kate Deutsch (Marlton, N.J./Camden Catholic) scored to end the first quarter and had a strong start in the second to put the Red Devils up by four.
The Green Terror went in front on an Anna Mondoro three-pointer at the midpoint of the half. Padalino buried back-to-back jumpers for the Red Devils at the end of the quarter with McDaniel holding a 38-35 advantage into the break.
Deutsch matched Mondoro with a game-high 11 points in the opening 20 minutes, adding six rebounds while going 4-for-5 from the field. Padalino went 4-for-5 as well, netting 10 points before the break while sophomore guard Claudia Maira (Clinton, N.J./North Hunterdon) knocked down a pair of three-pointers as well.
Jennifer Kremp (Jenkintown, Pa./Jenkintown) hit a pair of three-pointers fed a nice feed inside to Deutsch before Heiring and Halle Maeda (Santa Monica, Calif./Mira Costa) added triples as Dickinson started the half with an 14-0 run.
Lizzie Becker (Philadelphia, Pa./Germantown Friends) came on to hit a baseline jumper and had a nice put-back to stretch the margin the 55-42, late in the third quarter.
The Devils held the Terror to just seven points, outscoring the hosts 27-7 in the third frame, taking 62-45 advantage.
McDaniel started the fourth with a quick five points. The Terror looked to be gaining some momentum, but Maeda stalled the run with another big three-pointer.
Deutsch had a strong finish in the fourth, netting a game-high 18 points on 7-of-8 shooting from the floor. She recorded her fifth double-double of the season with 10 rebounds, adding a pair of blocked shots.
Padalino finished with 12 points and six rebounds while tallied 11 points and four rebounds, going 3-for-6 from beyond the arc. Heiring was just shy of double-figures with nine points to go with a pair of rebounds and two steals.
Kremp tallied eight points and six assists while Maira added six points, four rebounds and three assists on the afternoon.
The Red Devils improve to 9-7 overall and 6-5 in the Centennial Conference. They have another big match-up on Tuesday night, hosting Johns Hopkins University at 7:00 pm.
