Washington Edges Red Devils in 77-70 Shootout

(Chestertown, Md.) – The Dickinson women's basketball team came up short in a shootout at Washington College, falling 77-70, on Saturday afternoon.

The game saw a lot of action right out of the gate as the teams played to a 19-19 tie at the end of the first quarter. Halle Maeda (Santa Monica, Calif./Mira Costa) hit a pair of three-pointers to lead the Red Devils with eight points.

Hannah Heiring (Wayzata, Minn./Wayzata) scored a quick basket and Maura Leverone (Herndon, Va./Bishop O'Connell) hit a three-pointer to start the second period and the fast pace would continue.

The Red Devils built an eight-point lead following a three-pointer from Claudia Maira (Clinton, N.J./North Hunterdon) before Washington countered with an and-one and a three-pointer to cut the deficit to 33-31, with just under three minutes to play in the half.

Dickinson took a 36-32 lead into halftime after free throws from Kate Deutsch (Marlton, N.J./Camden Catholic) and Maeda. Maeda finished the half with a game-high 13 points, adding five in the second quarter.

Both teams remained hot on offense after the break with Dickinson holding a 54-50 edge at the end of the third quarter. Jennifer Kremp (Jenkintown, Pa./Jenkintown) hit a pair of three-pointers and Leverone knocked down another triple while Deutsch added strong play in the paint as well.

Washington took the lead before Leverone hit a jumper and dished an assist to Emily Padalino (West Sand Lake, N.Y./Albany Academy) to give Dickinson a 62-60 advantage at the midpoint of the half.

Padalino made a strong move inside and hit a pair of free throws to keep the game close, tying the score at 66-66.

The Shorewomen made a run, using free throws and a big three-pointer from Caitlyn Clark to build the lead to 73-66. They would hold off a late challenge to come away with the 77-70 win.

Deutsch was just shy of a double-double with 15 points and nine rebounds while Maeda finished with 14 on the afternoon.

Maira tallied nine points and four assists to go with a steal and a blocked shot. Leverone added nine points and three assists while Padalino had eight points and four rebounds with Kremp and Heiring chipping in with seven points each.

The Red Devils slip to 9-8 overall and 7-5 in the Centennial Conference. They return home to host Muhlenberg College on Wednesday night at 6:00 pm.
