Box Score (Gettysburg, Pa.) – The Dickinson women's basketball team won its fifth straight game, knocking off second-place Gettysburg on the road, 78-70, on Wednesday night.
The teams were neck-and-neck throughout the first quarter until the host Bullets pulled in front, 18-11, with 3:29 to play. Senior Hannah Heiring (Wayzata, Minn./Wayzata) hit a three-pointer to cut the deficit to three before a late free throw gave Gettysburg a 24-20 advantage at the end of one.
Heiring drained another three-pointer to open the second half as the Red Devils made a run to take the lead.
Claudia Maira (Clinton, N.J./North Hunterdon) scored and hit a pair of free throws before a three-pointer from Halle Maeda (Santa Monica, Calif./Mira Costa) and back-to-back triples from Heiring to put Dickinson up, 38-30.
Maira sank a pair of late free throws to give the Red Devils 45-39 lead at halftime.
A defensive battle in the third quarter saw the Bullets try and gain some ground as they held a 13-11 advantage in the period to cut the margin to 56-52.
The teams returned to form in the fourth quarter, combining for 40 points as the Red Devils held on, outscoring the Bullets 22-18.
Maira opened the final quarter with a three-pointer while Kate Deutsch (Marlton, N.J./Camden Catholic) and Maura Leverone (Herndon, Va./Bishop O'Connell) went to work on the foul line.
Leverone made it a two-possession game with a pair of free throws with 31 seconds remaining and added four more from the stripe for a 76-68 lead. Maeda countered a Bullet lay-up with two free throws to secure the 78-70 win.
Heiring went 5-for-7 from the field, including a perfect 4-for-4 from beyond the arc and 3-for-4 from the free throw line for a team-high 17 points, adding four rebounds on the night.
Leverone reached double-figures with 13 points, going 9-for-10 from the line while Maira tallied 12 points, five steals, four assists and three rebounds.
Jennifer Kremp (Jenkintown, Pa./Jenkintown) scored eight points and senior Emily Padalino (West Sand Lake, N.Y./Albany Academy) finished with seven points, five rebounds and three steals. Mia Kolb (Jenkintown, Pa./Jenkintown) chipped in with six rebounds, three assists and three steals.
The Red Devils improve to 14-10 overall and 12-7 in the Centennial Conference. They return home for the regular season finale, celebrating senior day on Saturday with a 2:00 pm tip-off against Washington College.
