Box Score (Haverford, Pa.) – The Dickinson women's basketball team suffered a 67-57 setback to host and top-seed Haverford College in the Centennial Conference semifinals on Friday night.
Emily Padalino (West Sand Lake, N.Y./Albany Academy) and Kate Deutsch (Marlton, N.J./Camden Catholic) put the Red Devils on the board early to give the Red Devils a 4-3 lead.
Mia Kolb (Jenkintown, Pa./Jenkintown) sandwiched a pair of lay-ups around two free throws from Maura Leverone (Herndon, Va./Bishop O'Connell) to close out the period after the 'Fords went on a run and jumped out to a 14-4 lead.
The 'Fords took a 18-10 advantage at the end of the first quarter and opened the second with three straight field-goals to stretch the margin to 24-10.
Deutsch scored twice with Kolb and Halle Maeda (Santa Monica, Calif./Mira Costa) adding baskets to cut the deficit to 26-19 before Anna-Sophia Capizzi hit a jumper and three-pointer to put Haverford up, 31-19 at halftime.
Deutsch and Kolb each tallied six points in the first half while Padalino pulled down seven rebounds and Kolb controlled five.
Claudia Maira (Clinton, N.J./North Hunterdon) made a strong move on baseline and completed a three-point play to start the third quarter. Maeda followed up with a nice drive, adding another three-point conversion to make the score, 31-25.
Maira countered a score from Capizzi to keep the margin at six. Hannah Peck (Baldwin, N.Y./Sacred Heart) hit a nice pull-up jumper but Capizzi answered again with a triple on the other end.
Peck found Deutsch inside, but it was Capizzi again with back-to-back scores for a 42-31 lead. The teams continued to trade baskets before Haverford built the lead to 51-35 at the end of the period.
Leverone and Kolb hit some early free throws in the fourth quarter and Leverone hit a big three-pointer to pull Dickinson within 11.
Deutsch hit a pair of free throws and finished an assist from Maira to keep the Red Devils within 10 at the 3:21 mark.
The Red Devils continued to keep the pressure on, forcing Haverford to convert from the free throw line. Padalino hit a big shot with just over a minute to play and Deutsch had a strong put-back and another lay-up, but Haverford would on for the win.
Deutsch led the Red Devils with 20 points, going 6-for-6 from the free throw line while Kolb tallied eight points and eight rebounds.
Maira had seven points, four rebounds and three assists. Leverone and Maeda combined for 13 points and Padalino finished with nine rebounds. Kate Montgomery (Scituate, Mass./Scituate) gave the Red Devils strong minutes inside as well.
The Red Devils finish 16-11 overall. Haverford will face the winner of #2-Gettysburg and #3-Johns Hopkins on Saturday afternoon at 4:00 pm.
