Slow First Dooms Devils in Loss to Bullets

Box Score

GETTYSBURG, Pa. - The Dickinson women's basketball team found themselves behind the eight-ball early trailing 18-7 after one and made just one of 15 threes on the night en route to a 58-44 loss to the host Gettysburg College Bullets on Wednesday night at Bream Gymnasium.

Things were tight early in the opening stanza with layups from Kate Montgomery and Mia Kolb cutting the deficit down to 6-5 at the 2:49 mark. Mackenzie Szlosek and Jennifer Kremp traded buckets to keep things close at 8-7 with five minutes gone. From then on the rest of the quarter belonged to the Bullets as Mackenzie Tinner and Meghan Barbera bookended a 10-0 run to make it 18-7 after 10 minutes.

Gettysburg added four points to begin the second thanks to layups by Szlosek and Tinner to advance the lead to 22-7 just over two minutes in. The Devils slowed the roll for a moment with two free throws from Kremp and a jumper by Abby John making it 22-11. The Bullets outscored the Red and Black 5-4 over the final six minutes with the visitors' buckets coming from Caitlin Blackman and Jenna Weinstein to leave the home side on top 27-15 at half.

Blackman and Kremp helped Dickinson to split the opening eight points of the third to hold the margin at a dozen (31-19). Four straight points from Blackman later in the frame allowed the Devils to stay within shouting distance at 35-23 still with 3:04 to play. Both sides would put up six points the remainder of the period as Weinstein and Kolb hit the bottom of the net for DC to make it 43-29 after a half-hour.

Avery Bennett and Delaney Donohoe helped Gettysburg to push the lead out to 46-29 with 1:06 gone. Lindsey Hollenshead, Gina Neigel, and Kolb tried to chip away at the deficit making it 46-33 still with 6:53 remaining. The Bullets used an 8-2 charge over the following three minutes to extend their advantage to 54-35. Dickinson responded with a 7-0 run with Neigel and Hollenshead picking up two each, while Kremp knocked down the lone triple for the Red and Black to pull within 54-43. A Blackman free throw at the 8:57 mark would be the final point for the Devils on the night as the host closed out the 58-44 win.
