Devils Sink Shorewomen for Pivotal Centennial Conference Win

Box Score

CHESTERTOWN, Md. - First-year Clair Marion netted a season-high 16 off the bench for the Dickinson women's basketball team as the Red Devils earned a season-split against the Washington (Md.) College Shorewomen with a 63-52 win on Saturday afternoon at Penny J. Fall Gym.

Washington got up early on baskets from Andrea Prestianne and Serena Pluta, but then Jennifer Kremp drilled two triples to bring Dickinson level 6-6 with 6:21 to play. Karry Kelliher put the home side back on top until a jumper by Kate Montgomery sparked an 8-0 run by the Red and White to take a 14-8 lead. The Shorewomen closed to within 14-12 thanks to Joy Sanders. Clair Marion added to the three-point shooting by nailing one from downtown and Mia Kolb added a driving layup for the 19-16 edge through one.

A Marion layup at the 13-second mark of the second would be the only bucket over the opening 3:09 until Kelliher finished at the rim to make it 21-18. Four points each by Prestianne and Sanders accounted for an 8-2 push by Washington to bring them back to the front at 26-23 with 2:45 left. The two sides shared the final ten points with Kremp and Marion tallying for Dickinson to leave the Red and White down just 31-28 at the break.

Kremp and Prestianne traded three points in the first two minutes of the third to hold the margin at three 34-31. Kolb, Kremp, and Montgomery organized a 7-2 drive by the visitors to reclaim the lead 38-36 with four minutes gone. After the teams split the ensuing eight points Madeline Williams and Prestianne netted five straight to move Washington back ahead 45-42. A Marion triple, followed by a Montgomery layup off a nice dish from Marion gave DC a slim 47-45 advantage heading to the fourth.

Dickinson would get their largest lead of the game right off the jump to begin the final frame with Kremp hitting twice at the charity line before Marion buried another long-range shot to make it 52-45 with just over a minute elapsed. Pluta and Prestianne chipped away at the deficit until Jenna Weinstein got on the board for the first time bumping the lead out to 54-49 at the 4:04 mark. After a Sanders baseline jumper made it 54-51, Gina Neigel and Montgomery knocked down three free throws for a 57-51 lead at the two-minute mark. A pair at the line by Blackman gave the Devils their largest advantage of the day at 59-51. The Red and White would salt the game away with foul shots by Blackman, Marion, and Montgomery for the 63-52 win.
