Devils Take Nationally-Recongized Corsairs to the Limit

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - The Dickinson women's basketball team put four players in double-figures on Saturday afternoon, including a game-high 17 from sophomore forward Mia Chapman. However, it would not be enough for the Red and White as they fell 67-60 to the Corsairs of UMass-Dartmouth on Day One of the Smith College Holiday Class at Ainsworth Gymnasium.

Dickinson hung tough early in the first as a jumper from Caitlin Blackman and a single foul shot by Victoria Zerbe left DC behind 4-3 with three minutes off the clock. Then, four points for Carly Whiteside and two each from Teja Andrews and Jemima Joseph opened up a 14-5 UMass edge prompting a Dickinson timeout at the 7:59 mark. The Devils made a statement the remainder of the frame that they were in it for the long haul as Lindsey Hollenshead, Clair Marion and Chapman closed on a 9-0 romp to level the game at 14 going to second.

A bucket by Chapman just ten-seconds into the second gave the Devils their first lead 16-14, but then scores for Kaylin Zalewski and Andrews gave Dartmouth a two-point cushion 18-16. An "old-fashioned" three-point play for Marion as well as two more on the charity line gave DC a 23-20 advantage, before the Andrews-Zalewski duo struck again to make it 24-23 still with 6:40 to go. Layups for both Blackman and Marion reclaimed the edge 27-24. Unfortunately, jumpers by the trio of Tyah Pettaway, Andrews and Whiteside brought the Corsairs back in front 30-27 through 20 minutes.

UMass continued to add onto their advantage early in the third as a layup by Hollenshead was the only DC bucket during a 7-2 run to open up a 37-29 lead with just over three minutes off the clock. Dickinson battled back once again with Chapman converting twice at the rim and Zerbe adding two at the line cutting it down to 37-35. The pair of Jaelyn Lavigne and Pettaway tallied seven of the next nine to stretch the margin out to seven (44-37). The Red and White chipped into the deficit by getting baskets from Chapman, Hollenshead and Zerbe to make it 46-42. Jumpers by Amaris Mills and Pettaway sandwhiched a layup from Abby John to leave it at 50-44 with ten minutes to play.

Four consecutive points by Melanie Demeo pushed the edge to double-digits 54-44, but back-to-back buckets from Blackman gave DC a chance at 54-48 still with over six minutes left. UMD once again had the answer every time Dickinson got close as this time Mills and Pettaway amassed a 6-1 run to open it up to 60-49. However, the Devils kept on fighting as Blackman and Chapman tallied six straight points to cut the deficit down to 60-55 at the seven minute mark. Despite points from Chapman and Hollenshead down the stretch, the Corsairs were able to close the game out on the foul line for the 67-60 result.
