CARLISLE, Pa. - In front of a raucous crowd at the Kline Center the Dickinson women's basketball team had visions of advancing to Friday night's Centennial Conference Semifinal. Blocking the path for the Red and White was a familiar foe in the Washington College Shorewomen as the two squared off in a rematch of last year's first-round contest won by WAC. Unfortunately for the Devils the same fate would befall them on this night as the visitors used a 19-3 edge at the foul line to secure a 56-48 overtime win on Tuesday night in the First Round of the playoffs.
It was DC who was flying high early in front of the massive crowd as
Caitlin Blackman and
Kate Montgomery had the hosts out to a 7-0 lead with 3:18 gone. After four quick points by the visitors, Montgomery responded with a jumper off a dish from
Mia Kolb (9-4). The next two minutes went by scoreless, before Kaitlyn Boggs, Karry Kelliher and Andrea Prestianne went on a 9-0 run to lead 13-9 through one.
The two sides traded buckets to start the second with
Lindsey Hollenshead and Blackman supplying the offense for the Red and White to leave them behind 16-13 at the 1:10 mark. Lizzie Hudock and Joy Sanders joined Prestianne on a 6-2 gallop to stretch their advantage to 22-15 with not even three minutes gone. Dickinson fought back the remainder of the period as
Clair Marion,
Jenna Weinstein, Blackman and Montgomery tallied nine of the final eleven points to leave things locked at 24 going to the break.
Dickinson brought the crowd to life quick in the third thanks to Hollenshead and Kolb making it 28-24, but then Boggs and Sanders had the immediate response. After Blackman cashed in a Hollenshead pass, the Shorewomen netted six straight to give them a 34-30 edge. Montgomery would give DC some momentum heading to the fourth with a baseline jay (34-32).
A triple by Blackman along with jumpers from
Mia Chapman and Marion making it 39-36 Devils with 8:21 left. Once again the guests had an answer as Hudock, Kelliher, and Rose mounted a 6-1 push to reclaim a 42-40 lead still with 5:11 to play. A jumper from Hollenshead tied the score at 42 heading into the final minute. A trey for Marion cancelled out two free throws by Prestianne to give the home side a slim 45-44 edge with 36-ticks left. A fifth foul by Montgomery resulted in Hudock splitting two at the line allowing the Devs a Marion floater at the buzzer for the win, but it clanged off the rim to result in overtime.
Washington took command early in the extra session scoring five of the first six to lead 50-45 with 2:51 off the clock. A jumper by Blackman pulled DC to within 50-48, but unfortunately the Shorewomen tallied the remaining six points to close out the 56-48 win.
