ASHLAND, Va. - The Dickinson women's basketball team got double-digits from the trio of
Lizzie McGrath,
Clair Marion and
Clare Cronley on Friday night at Crenshaw Gymnasium. However, it would not be enough on the evening as the host Randolph-Macon College used a strong final 20 minutes to overcome the Red and White 60-53 in non-conference action.
- The home side came out firing as buckets for Bella Bruce, Catherine Kagey, Morgan Miller and Juliana Park had them in front 14-5 six minutes in.
- Following a steal by Jenna Weinstein, McGrath knocked down a triple and Ella Smith along with Cronley put up buckets in the pain just prior to the end of the frame to cut it down to 16-12 through one.
- RMC collected six of the first eight points as Marion supplied the only bucket for DC in the opening five minutes (22-14).
- Dickinson then dominated the remainder of the period going on a 12-0 run aided primarily by three-balls for Marion and McGrath (2) as well as contributions from Abby John and Smith making it 26-22 Devils at the break.
- The Yellow Jackets ended the half missing their final five shots going scoreless over the final 5:39.
- RMC continued their cold streak coming up empty on their opening six shots until Park ended the drought with a free throw with 1:27 gone (26-23).
- The two sides then traded baskets for awhile as points from Marion and Smith helped the Red and White to take a 31-28 edge with 5:37 left.
- The trio of Sam Smith, Kagey and Miller then embarked on a 10-3 run to reclaim a 38-34 advantage.
- Caitlin Blackman would tally the final point of the frame splitting a pair at the charity stripe leaving it at 38-35 with a quarter to go.
- Dickinson pulled to within one (43-42) just under two minutes in with Blackman netting five points, while Victoria Zerbe chipped in a layup off a dish from Marion.Â
- Triples out of the hands of Bruce and Park capped an 8-0 push for the Jackets to leave the score at 51-42 still with over half the period to play.
- The next two minutes went by scoreless as the time continue to tick away on the Devils. Fortunately, three points each from McGrath and Weinstein kept DC alive 51-48.
- RMC continued to hold the Red and White at-bay as a three for Marion cut it down to 55-51, while two at the line from Blackman left the guests five back at 58-53 with less than a half-minute to play.
