Devils Fall in Regular Season Finale to No. 16 Blue Jays

BALTIMORE - The Dickinson women's basketball team closed out the regular season on Saturday afternoon with a 68-45 Centennial Conference defeat to the 16th-ranked Johns Hopkins University Blue Jays at Goldfarb Gymnasium.
Template - 1st Quarter
  • The home side got out to a fast 4-0 start two minutes in on buckets for Jadyn Murray and Michaela O'Neil.
  • Following a steal by Clair Marion of Greta Miller, she would pick up the first points of the game for DC.
  • However, a Murray free throw led to four straight by the home side to make it 8-2, before a jumper for Caitlin Blackman and layup from Abby John cut the margin to just two 8-6 with 3:21 left.
  • The Jays would open up the lead to 13-6 heading to the second courtesy of scores by Emily Collins and Kendall Dunham.
Template - 2nd Quarter
  • The teams traded the first eight points of the period with Mia Chapman and Jenna Weinstein tallying for the Red and White to make it 15-10.
  • An O'Neil turnaround jumper then kicked off a 6-2 spurt ending on a Collins jumper pushing the lead to 21-12.
  • A trio of Victoria Zerbe layups and a hard earned finish by Ella Smith over the next couple of minutes kept the Devils hanging in there at 24-20 with half the frame gone.
  • Johns Hopkins answered back with eleven quick points from the Murray-O'Neil tandem along with contributions from Layla Henderson and Collins to make it 35-20 with nine minutes off the clock.
  • Another Zerbe bucket slowed the roll for a second, but back-to-back Henderson layups in the final 15-seconds made it 39-22 at halftime.
Template - 3rd Quarter
  • Dickinson began the third with a strong defensive effort leading to buckets for Weinstein and Zerbe, unfortunately, consecutive tallies from Miller erased the momentum (43-26) with 3:15 gone.
  • Over the next three minutes each side could only muster one basket as Clare Cronley hit from deep and Lauren Knudson stuck a shot from the mid-range.
  • As the end of the quarter rolled around Hopkins extended the lead to 49-32 on a pair of free throws by Beth Corelli and a jumper for Dunham, while Cronley split two at the charity line.
Template - 4th Quarter
  • Hopkins blew things open early in the period as three points from Murray started a 10-2 run over the first three minutes prompting a DC timeout with the score 59-34.
  • Following a Corelli layup out of the stoppage, Blackman and Chapman combined for five in a row to trim the gap down to 63-39 with 2:45 to play.
  • Addison Cadwell, Leah Dubin and Gabby Smelcer would add buckets late to set the 68-45 final.
