CARLISLE, Pa. - After unfortunately watching the women's team suffer a 6-3 defeat to Saint Lawrence University earlier in the day. The 25th-ranked Dickinson men's squash team took to the Kline Squash Center courts knowing that they had to post a win against the Saints in order to have a shot at regaining the Devil-Saints Cup. That was exactly what the Red and White did as they dug deep showcasing grit and determination en route to a 7-2 win. By virtue of the men's substantial win the Cup returns to Carlisle as the Devils posted a combined score of 10 between the men and women's matches to the visitors eight thus claiming the Cup.
Inside the Match
Joe Smythe playing at the top spot held on for a close 12-10 win in game one against Mina Yousef, before winning the next two 11-2 and 11-5 to take the match. Just behind him was where
Elian Vera and Miguel Posada Villa shared the spoils of the opening two games, but it was ultimately Vera who held on for the 14-12 victory in third game and a solid 11-5 triumph during the fourth. After
Owen Buroker was bested in four by Patrick Walford at number three, William Krizek (4th) dropped the first bout to Alexander Scott prior to winning the war by taking the following three games.
Derek Du down at the fifth spot exchanged the first two with Harrison Callaway, but was defeated 11-8 and 11-4 in games three and four respectively. In slots six and seven the pair of
James Kiracofe and
Cormac Sullivan each picked up a victory in four games against Gavin Cassidy and Dmitry Stepanenko.
Gerardo Ortiz battling at the eighth flight versus Coby Galarza erased a 2-0 deficit by running off three straight wins by scores of 11-8, 15-13 and 11-9 to tally another win for the Devils. Dickinson notched their final win of the day when
George Vollmer V needed to go the distance with Jesus Pena in order to claim a 3-2 victory.
