After 40-Plus Years Coach Nichter to Say Goodbye to Dickinson

CARLISLE, Pa. – After nearly four decades of defining the standard for distance running in Carlisle, a cornerstone of Dickinson Athletics is crossing his final finish line. Don Nichter, the longtime head coach of the men's and women's cross country programs and former leader of the track and field teams, has announced his retirement to come at the end of the 2026 cross country season, marking the end of one of the most storied coaching tenures in Centennial Conference history.

When Don Nichter first stepped onto the limestone trails of Carlisle in the mid-1980s, he inherited a budding program and forged it into a perennial national contender. His statistical record is among the most decorated in the history of the Centennial Conference. Under his guidance, the Red Devils captured 24 Centennial Conference team championships between cross country and track & field. This collective success reached a historic apex during the 2009-2010 academic year when the men's programs achieved the "Triple Crown," sweeping conference titles in cross country, indoor track, and outdoor track—a feat that remains a benchmark for program-wide depth and excellence.

At Dickinson though, Coach Nichter's immense impact extends far beyond the wins, losses, statistics, and records set by numerous athletes. Coach Nichter has served as a mentor to hundreds if not thousands of student-athletes emphasizing a philosophy that prioritized academic integrity as well as personal growth alongside athletic performance. His programs were staples on the USTFCCCA All-Academic Team lists, reflecting his belief that a Dickinson education and championship-level athletics were not mutually exclusive.

As Coach Nichter prepares to depart the trails, he leaves a program in a position of strength and a legacy that is etched into the very fabric of Dickinson College. His influence will continue to be felt not only throughout the Dickinson community, but in the hearts, minds and examples set by the athletes that he has turned into leaders both on and off the course/track through his famous mantra "The Journey is the Reward". We will celebrate Coach Nichter's many accomplishments over the next several months as he concludes his tenure at the end of the 2026 cross country season.
