Richard Glanfield

Richard Glanfield is heading into his fourth season coaching the Red Devils, and his third as the full-time head coach.

Glanfield, who is a native of Shropshire, England, first begin his professional playing career in 1983, but then quickly turned to coaching, becoming the world’s youngest international squash coach at age 21, coaching the Cyprus national team at the European Championship in 1986. Since then, Glanfield has coached national teams at the highest levels of the sport, from the Caribbean, European, South American, Asian, Pan American team championships as well as the Asian Games and the Commonwealth Games. Glanfield is most well-known for coaching Nicol David, former world number one women’s squash player and an 8-time world champion, from the age of eleven to twenty-one.

Since arriving to Carlisle, Glanfield has guided the Red Devil women to their highest and second highest ranking in its program’s history, while also guiding the men to their second highest ranking in program history. When talking about his team’s success since his arrival to Carlisle, Glanfield said “I’ll take a great performance over a bad victory every time,” which is a testament to Glanfield’s focus on the development of his student athletes. “Success comes naturally when the focus is about the level of performance.”
