Mules Escape Devils at Home 73-70

(Allentown, Pa.) - The Dickinson College men's basketball team turned in another strong performance but suffered another heartbreaker as well, falling on the road at Muhlenberg, 73-70.

 

The Red Devils held a 35-34 lead at halftime, erasing an nine-point deficit with a 21-11 run over the final 6:55. Junior Matt Dolan (Chalfont, Pa./St. Joe's Regional) capped the run with a 25-foot, three-pointer to close out the half.

 

Another three-pointer from Dolan put the Devils in front 46-45 with 16:44 remaining in the game. The Mules regrouped and went on a 10-0 run to pull in front 55-46 at the 11:19 mark.

 

The Devils battled back with sophomore Chris Heine (Spring Lake, N.J./St. Rose) tying the game once on a lay-up and again with a three-pointer, knotting the game at 66-66 with just over three minutes to play.

 

First-year Doug Jakiela (Wayne, Pa./Conestoga) put the Devils in front, 68-66, with a pair of free throws and Dolan hit another to give Dickinson at 69-66 advantage with 2:27 on the clock.

 

The Mules answered with a pair of free throws and a three-pointer to take a 71-69 lead. First-year Chris Barsanti (Hummelstown, Pa./Tilton School) hit one-of-two free throws and Jakiela controlled the rebound to keep the ball in the hands of the Devils.

 

Dickinson could not get the shot to fall and was forced to send Matt O'Hara (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) to the line. He hit both to put the Mules in front, 73-70 with 17 seconds to play.

 

The Devils missed a shot to tie but junior Chris Harrington (Cheverly, Md./Georgetown Prep) pulled down the rebound. Following the timeout, the Devils had one more chance, but could not get the shot to fall.

 

Dolan had another big outing, scoring a game-high 24 points to go with five rebounds and a pair of assists. He hit 4-of-6 from beyond the arc and was 4-for-5 from the stripe.

 

Harrington finished with 12 points, hitting four three pointers while Barsanti tallied 11 points, three assists, a block and a steal. Jakiela scored nine points, controlled a team-best six rebounds and dished out four assists.

 

The Mules improved to 4-3 overall and 3-0 in the Centennial Conference. The Red Devils slip to 0-6 and 0-3. Dickinson heads to Grantham on Friday to face Williamson Trade in the opening round of the Messiah College Tournament.
