(Carlisle, Pa.) – Moravian College named sophomore Matt
Johnson the starting quarterback on Saturday afternoon. The move
paid off as Johnson led the Greyhounds to a 24-16 win over
Dickinson. Johnson threw for 174 yards and ran for 61, including a
4-yard touchdown as Moravian improved to 2-3 overall and 2-2 in the
Centennial Conference. The Red Devils slip to 1-3 overall and
1-2.
The teams traded punts on their opening possessions with
Moravian senior punter Eric Dziengelski dropping a 57-yard bomb to
the Dickinson three yard line. Three plays later Daniel Burley
intercepted a pass on the nine yard line and returned it for a
touchdown to put the 'Hounds on the board at the 6:17 mark of the
first quarter.
Following another Dickinson punt, Moravian's Ian Heck missed a
46 yard field-goal attempt, giving the Devils the ball on the 29
yard line. The defense held, returning a punt to their own 40 yard
line. On 2-and-19, junior Scott
Sullivan (Coatesville, Pa./Bishop Shanahan)
intercepted Johnson and returned the pick to the 'Hounds' 25. That
led to a 23-yard touchdown pass from Ricky Martz
(Pottsgrove, Pa./Pottsgrove) to Craig Helfer
(W. Caldwell, N.J./Newark Academy) with 12:40 remaining in
the half. The extra-point attempt was blocked, keeping Moravian in
front, 7-6.
The teams traded punts before a Dickinson fumble gave the ball
to Moravian at midfield. The Devils would then block a 43-yard
field-goal attempt that Andrew Fink
(Schuylkill Haven, Pa./Schuylkill Haven) returned 20 yards
to the Moravian 40.
Senior Gordon Craig
(Grove City, Pa./Grove City) split the uprights with a
25-yard field-goal to put Dickinson on top, 9-7, at the half.
The teams continued to trade punts after the half, but one would
prove costly for Moravian as junior Mike Shimkin
(New Hope, Pa./Princeton Day School) returned a kick 75
yards for a touchdown to give Dickinson a 16-7 lead with 7:15 on
the clock in the third quarter.
The 'Hounds would answer with an 85 yard drive, using just over
six minutes to answer with a four-yard run by Johnson to cut the
deficit to 16-14. On the Devils' next possession, Craig lined-up
for a 46-yard field-goal. The kick was long enough, but sailed just
right of the uprights.
Heck converted a 39-yard attempt to put Moravian in front,
17-16, with 8:30 remaining in the game. They would force the
Devils to punt once again, and Moravian went 55 yards on eight
plays to stretch the lead to 24-16 on a three-yard dive by Joe
Tegan with just 2:48 left to play.
Martz drove the Devils to the Moravian eight yard line on a toss
to offensive lineman Michael
Tucker (Pottstown, Pa/Pottstown), but they could not
score on 4th down, turning the ball back over to
Moravian with 1:32 on the clock. The Devils would hold, forcing the
Hounds to punt one last time. Dickinson took over on the Moravian
35 yard line, looking for one final score to tie the game. With
just 28 second to work with, the Devils could not make it to the
end zone before time expired.
Martz completed 21-of-36 passes for 189 yards. Smith caught nine
passes for 71 yards while Helfer finished with 69 yards on six
catches to go with a great effort on the touchdown.
Senior captain Kevin Wood
(Westford, Mass./Westford Academy) led the defense with 12
tackles, including 10 solo stops and four tackles-for-loss.
Pete Hamill
(Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown West) added 11 tackles while
Sullivan finished with 10 tackles, 1.5-for-loss, the
interception and two pass break-ups.
Shawn Sylvainus made six catches for 142 yards to lead the
Moravian offense. Jake Hildebrand made 11 tackles.
The Red Devils travel to Baltimore on Friday for a 7:00 kick-off
at Johns Hopkins' Homewood Field.
