Strong Finish Leads Bears Past Devils 41-21

(Collegeville, Pa.) – The Dickinson College football team played even with Ursinus on Saturday until an explosive fourth quarter led the Bears to a 41-21 victory and a share of the Centennial Conference title. The Bears finished the regular season 8-2 overall and 7-2 in the CC. They tie with Muhlenberg and Johns Hopkins for the top spot in the standings. The Devils finish 3-7 overall and 3-6 in conference play.

 

Senior Tim Smith (Hanover, Pa./Southwestern) put the Devils on the board first, scoring on a 13-yard run on the Devils' opening drive. The teams traded punt before the Bears answered with a 32-yard touchdown pass from Justin Decristofaro to Nick Giarratano to cap a 10-play drive with 4:09 to play in the first quarter.

 

The Bears pulled in front midway through the second quarter on a two-yard dive by Teddy Conrad. The Devils answered just five plays later when offensive lineman Michael Tucker (Pottstown, Pa./Pottstown) scored on a four-yard run to knot the game at 14-14 at halftime.

 

Decristofaro regained the lead for the Bears with a three-yard touchdown run in the third quarter. He then added back-to-back 70-yard touchdown passes to Al Desiderio and Giarratano to stretch the margin to 35-14 with 8:03 remaining in the game.

 

The Devils went to the air for a 55-yard touchdown pass of their own. Junior Ricky Martz (Pottsgrove, Pa./Pottsgrove) hit Craig Helfer (W. Caldwell, N.J./Newark Academy) to pull the Devils within a pair of touchdowns with 7:18 on the clock.

 

Ursinus closed out the scoring on a one-yard run from Matt McHugh with 1:26 remaining to secure the win for the Bears.

 

Martz and classmate Jordan Kaufman (Somerset, Pa./Somerset) combined for 171 yards passing on the day. Kaufman also ran for 43 yards on nine carries. Helfer caught five passes for 103 yards in the game.

 

Senior Kevin Wood (Westford, Mass./Westford Academy) led the defense with a game-high 13 tackles, including eight solo stops and a sack. Pat McNeal (Glen Mills, Pa./Archmere Academy) added nine tackles while Scott Sullivan (Coatesville, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) chipped in with seven.

 

The Red Devils wrap up the season 3-7 overall and 3-6 in the Centennial Conference.
