(Huntingdon, Pa.) – The Dickinson College football team scored 31 points in the second half on the way to a 41-14 win at Juniata on Saturday. The Red Devils used a balanced offensive attack to take control after leading just 10-7 at halftime.
The Eagles struck first, capitalizing on a turnover midway through the first quarter, scoring on a 10-yard pass from Gino Ramires to Dominic Bornman at the 6:00 mark. Dickinson answered on its next drive, capping a 73-yard drive with a five-yard pass from Ricky Martz (Pottsgrove, Pa./Pottsgrove) to Tyler Rosa' (Carmel, Calif./Stevenson School) with just 1:10 remaining in the first period.
Senior Gordon Craig (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) kicked a 27-yard field-goal with 2:11 remaining in the first half for the only points of the second quarter.
The teams traded punts to open the second half before the Devils moved the ball to the Juniata one-yard line. The Eagles pounced on another fumble to take over possession. Two plays later, however, the Devils forced a safety as Julian Rosen (Brecksville, Ohio/University School) and Kevin Wood (Westford, Mass./Westford Academy) wrapped up Zach McCaulley in the end zone.
The Devils scored on the ensuing drive as well to stretch the lead to 20-7 with 7:27 remaining in the third quarter. Martz hit Craig Helfer (W. Caldwell, N.J./Newark Academy) with a 27-yard pass and connected with Rosa' for a two-point conversion.
Senior Tim Smith (Hanover, Pa./Southwestern) scored from two yards out to open the fourth quarter. Mike Shimkin (New Hope, Pa./Princeton Day School) tacked on another Red Devil scored just 1:03 later on a 24-yard run. That score was set up by a 23 yard interception return from Rosen.
First-year Kyle Smith (Easton, Pa./Easton) broke free for a 30 yard touchdown run in the final minute to close out the scoring for the Red Devils. The Eagles added their final points on a 76 yard return on the kick-off by Abram Mellinger for the final of 41-14.
Martz finished the day 14-of-25 for 177 yards and two touchdowns. Helfer made seven catches for a game-high 114 yards while Rosa' covered 37 yards on just three catches.
Rosen led the defense with six tackles, including one-for-loss and a safety. He added another interception as well, covering 16 yards on that return. Pete Hamill (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown West) returned an interception 21 yards while recording a sack. First-year Michael Miller (Hainesport, N.J./Bishop Eustace) chipped in with six tackles, one-for-loss and a forced fumble on the day.
The Devils held Juniata to just 23 yards rushing and 109 yards passing. Jason Marquis recorded a game-high 10 tackles and recovered a fumble to lead the defense.
The Red Devils close out the regular season at Ursinus College next Saturday. Kick-off is scheduled for 1:00 pm in Collegeville.
