(Lancaster, Pa.) – The Dickinson College men's basketball team continued its quest for a Centennial Conference title, taking one step closer, posting a 71-62 semifinal win over Gettysburg on Saturday afternoon. One year ago today, the Red Devils season was over as they finished in last place in the conference. What a difference a year makes as the Red Devils are less than 24 hours away from facing Franklin & Marshall for the Centennial Championship.
A slow start found the Devils trailing 18-10 as Gettysburg knocked-down four three-pointers in the opening eight minutes. The Devils closed the gap with an 8-2 run to cut the deficit to 20-15 with 8:51 remaining in the first half.
A pair of Tucker Landy (Durham, Conn./Xavier) free throws put the Devils in front for just the second time, 35-34, at 2:47 mark. The Bullets closed out the half with a jumper and another three-pointer to hold a 39-35 lead at halftime.
Sophomore Chris Barsanti (Hummelstown, Pa./Tilton School) tied the game with back-to-back dunks to open the second half. Kevin Kennedy stretched the lead to 44-41 before the Devils went on an 8-1 run to pull in front, 49-45, with 10:39 remaining.
First-year Adam Honig (Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greeley) drained a three-pointer to trigger another Red Devil run that put them up, 57-50 at the 4:20 mark. Honig hit four free throws and senior Pat Kearns (Hartford, Conn./East Catholic) sank a pair to stretch the advantage to 67-57 with under a minute to play. The Devils hit 4-of-6 in the final 38 seconds to secure the win and a spot in Sunday's Championship game.
Senior captain Matt Dolan (Chalfont, Pa./St. Joe's Prep) led the Devils with 17 points on 6-of-10 shooting, hitting 3-of-5 three-pointers and dishing out three assists. Kearns went 6-for-7 from the line, scoring 12 points and adding a pair of steals.
Honig finished with nine points, four rebounds, two assists and a steal while Chris Heine (Spring Lake, N.J./St. Rose) tallied eight points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals. Greg Nicol (Aberdeen, Scotland/Taft School, Conn.) recorded a game-high eight rebounds to go with eight points. Barsanti finished with seven points while Landy added seven points, four assists, a pair of blocked shots and a steal.
Kennedy finished with a game-high 21 points, hitting 4-of-7 three-pointers to lead Gettysburg (14-12). Andrew Powers tallied 16 points and five rebounds.
The Red Devils improve to 15-11 on the season. They will face top-seed Franklin & Marshall in the final at 3:00 pm. The Diplomats advanced to the final, topping Haverford by the same score, 71-62. F&M escaped with an overtime win in Carlisle while the Devils captured a road win to even the series in the regular season.
