Underclassmen Excel to Lead Devils Past Montclair 15-10

(Montclair, N.J.) – The Dickinson College men's lacrosse team, ranked 16th in the latest USILA Coaches Poll, improved to 3-0 on the season with a 15-10 road win over Montclair State University on Saturday.

 

The Devils took a 3-1 lead in the first quarter behind a pair of extra-man goals from first-year Brian Cannon (Reisterstown, Md./Loyola Blakefield), both assisted by classmate Brian Gleason (Darien, Conn./Darien).

 

Cannon fed sophomore Christian Beitel (Newtown, Conn./Newtown) for the first of his five goals at the 12:55 mark of the second quarter. Beitel found the net three more times in the second period as the Devils went into halftime with an 8-5 advantage.

 

Sophomore Matt Cherry (Radnor, Pa./Radnor) scored with 26 seconds remaining in the half and struck again to open the third period, stretching the Devil lead to 9-5 with 13:15 on the clock. Montclair scored at the 11:41 mark, but the Devils answered on the ensuing face-off as Cannon finished an assist from long-stick midfielder Brandon Palladino (Basking Ridge, N.J./Basking Ridge) just eight seconds later.

 

Sophomore Nick Leon (Chevy Chase, Md./Gonzaga) scored the second of his three goals at the 7:19 mark of the third. Junior Ward Gruppo (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Prep) tallied the assists to put the Devils in front, 11-5.

 

Montclair added a goal with three second remaining in the third and struck again just 56 seconds into the fourth quarter to cut the deficit to 11-7. The Devils would answer again with three straight as Beitel scored with an assist from Cannon, then fed Leon less than a minute later to make the score 13-7. Exactly one minute later junior Bobby Kingsley (Bethesda, Md./St. Albans) found the night with an assist from Cherry to give the Devils some breathing room with just over 11 minutes to play.

 

Montclair tried to rally, outscoring the Devils 3-1 in the final 10:41, but the Devils would hold on for the win to improve to 3-0. Beitel tacked on an assist Palladino to close out the scoring for the Devils at the 3:24 mark.

 

Cannon continued to raise his scoring totals for the season, adding three goals and a game-high five assists. Beitel scored five goals and dished out two assists while Leon chipped in with a three-goal effort as well.

 

Palladino added a goal and an assist to go with five ground balls and three caused turnovers. Cherry finished with two goals and two assists. Junior Chip Murray (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) won 9-of-13 face-offs and controlled six ground balls. First-year Parker Waldron (Kinnelon, N.J./Kinnelon) claimed 6-of-11 face-offs and controlled seven GBs.

 

Peter Zouck (Baltimore, Md./Gilman) anchored a solid defensive effort with four ground balls in front of goaltender Greg Hanley (Laurel Hollow, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor), who finished with 14 saves on the day, including six in the final period.

 

The #16-ranked Red Devils (3-0) return to Carlisle for their home opener on Wednesday. They host Kenyon College at 4:00 pm.
