(Carlisle, Pa.) – The 16th-ranked Dickinson College women's soccer team rolled to a 5-0 win in the season opener against SUNY Brockport on Friday afternoon. The Red Devils received strong performances from a number of first-year players, scoring twice in the first half and tacking on three more after the break.
Sophomore Samantha Friday (Southborough, Mass./Algonquin Regional) put the Devils on the board, scoring the first two goals of the game. She finished a double-assist from first-year Cate Maugle (Glenmoore, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) and Ashley Fields (Far Hills, N.J./Ridge) in the 23rd minute.
Maugle connected with classmate Julia Thayer (Washington, D.C./Maret School) for another double-assist to Friday with eight minutes remaining in the first half.
Thayer tallied twice in the second half as Devils simply changed the order of things with similar results. Maugle and Friday set up Thayer for a header to put Dickinson in front, 3-0, with 30 minutes remaining in the game. Thayer added her second goal 10 minutes later, scoring unassisted in the 70th minute.
Sophomore Olivia Licata (Upper Saddle River, N.J./Northern Highlands) closed out the scoring in the 81st minute of play as Fields picked up her second assist of the afternoon.
Junior goaltender Annie Weichert (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) made five saves before first-year Liz Cassin (Summit, N.J./Summit) came on to close things out in the final eight minutes.
The Red Devils (1-0), 16th in the nation in the National Soccer Coaches Association Preseason rankings, will host Lycoming College on Saturday at 5:00 pm.
In the second game of the 2011 Red Devil Classic, Allegheny College posted 5-0 victory over Lycoming. Allegheny will face SUNY Brockport on Saturday at 2:30 pm.
