(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson College women's soccer team turned in a strong performance against the number one team in the country on Wednesday night. The top-ranked Falcons of Messiah posted a 3-0 win to improve to 7-0-1 on the year. However, the Red Devils held their own with strong play throughout the night.
Carlisle native Erin Hench led the way for Messiah, assisting on the game-winner and adding a goal of her own as well. Hench crossed a pass to Ali Rogers on the 12 yard line. Rogers turned and slipped a shot just inside the left post to put the Falcons on the board in the 20th minute.
Dickinson held strong throughout the first half, trailing by just the one goal at the break. Hench made the score 2-0 in the 57th minute, scoring off a square-pass inside from Corrine Wolf. A little over three minutes later, Alex Brandt connected on a driving shot from the outside to give Messiah a 3-0 cushion with about 30 minutes remaining in the game.
Despite a significant advantage in shots for the Falcons (25-3), the Devils still posed a threat almost throughout the entire contest. The Falcon defense would hold, however, having allowed just one goal in their first eight matches.
Weichert made nine saves on the night while first-year Liz Cassin (Summit, N.J./Summit) came on to make a pair of saves in the final 18 minutes.
The Red Devils (4-3-1) return to Centennial Conference action on Saturday, traveling to Muhlenberg College for a 4:00 kick-off.
