(Collegeville, Pa.) – The Dickinson football team closed out the season with a tough loss at Ursinus College, falling 48-7, on Saturday afternoon.
The Bears struck early, scoring on their first drive of the game, using a four-play, 59-yard drive. Bryan Ellis scored on a four-yard run to give Ursinus at 7-0 lead. That score would hold throughout the first quarter, but the Bears erupted to outscore the Devils, 24-7, in the second.
Teddy Conrad dove in from the one yard line to open the second quarter, scoring with just four seconds gone in the second period. The Bears quickly extended the lead to 21-0, just 20 seconds later as Greg Fontaina returned a fumble 25 yards for another Ursinus touchdown. Eric Boyer split the uprights with a 21-yard field-goal to stretch the lead to 24-0 with 6:48 remaining in the half. That field-goal capped a clock-draining drive that took 5:28, covering 63 yards in 11 plays.
The Devils broke into the end zone, answering with a 69-yard drive. Sophomore quarterback Cole Ahnell (Rockville, Md./Walter Johnson) hit senior Matt Wood (Baltimore, Md./Perry Hall) with an 11-yard touchdown pass at the 2:51 mark.
Ursinus closed out the half with a 24-yard touchdown pass from Chris Curran to Jerry Rahill, scoring with 1:07 on the clock to take a 31-7 lead into the break.
Both defenses held for the better part of the third quarter. Ursinus scored on a big play as Curran hit Rahill again, this time for a 79-yard scoring strike with 6:29 to play in the quarter. Boyer added a 32-yard field-goal to extend the margin to 41-7 at the end of three quarters of play.
The Bears would find the end zone one more time on the day as Conrad found pay-dirt from three yards out for the final of 48-7.
Curran finished the day completing 14-of-33 passes for 275 yards and a pair of touchdowns. He added 71 yards rushing while Conrad finished with 80 yards on the ground and two touchdowns. Rahill was the big receiver on the day, making five catches for 123 yards and two scores.
Ahnell led the Devils with 83 yards passing and 42 on the ground. Sophomore Eric Ondo (Richland, Pa./ELCO) caught four passes for 51 yards.
Sophomore Adam Kaminski (Exton, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) had a busy afternoon, punting nine times for an average of 36.6 yards per kick with a long of 59 on the day. Junior co-captain Michael Miller (Hainesport, N.J./Bishop Eustace) led the defense with seven tackles while senior Marek Laco (Potomac, Md./Landon School) made six solo stops.
Senior Schuyler Simpson (Potomac, Md./Bullis) also added six tackles while Michael Byrnes (Greenwich, Conn./Brunswick School) and Nate Detwiler (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Hollidaysburg) each made five stops, including a pair of tackles-for-loss.
Fontaina added five tackles and a pair of sacks to his fumble recovery to lead the Ursinus defense. Tyrell Martin intercepted a pass and recovered a fumble. The Bears finish 6-4 overall and 5-4 in the Centennial Conference. Dickinson finishes the season 4-6 overall and 4-5 in the CC.
