(Westminster, Md.) – The Dickinson men's basketball team held off a late run by McDaniel College to defeat the Green Terror, 74-68, on Thursday night.
Sophomore Gerry Wixted (Moorestown, N.J./Lawrenceville School) hit a pair of three-pointers and a jumper to put the Devils in front, 8-0. He hit another three-pointer at the 8:04 mark to give the Devils their biggest lead of the half, 29-17.
The Devils held a seven point edge at the half, holding a 40-33 advantage.
Dickinson answered a McDaniel basket with a three-pointer from junior Adam Honig (Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greeley) and a dunk by Tucker Landy (Durham, Conn./Xavier) to pull in front by nine. A Landy triple with 16:07 remaining stretched the margin to 50-36.
The Green Terror fought their way back into the game, taking their first and only lead of the night at the 2:43 mark. A Duane Echols steal and lay-up put McDaniel on top, 65-64.
Wixted hit a jumper to regain the lead for Dickinson and dished out an assist on a Honig triple to extend the lead to 69-65. Hoing and Landy then combined to hit six straight free throws as the Devils closed out the game with a 10-3 run.
Wixted scored a game-high 26 points, adding six rebounds and four blocked shots. Landy went 5-for-8 from the floor and 7-for-7 from the line for 17 points while Honig finished with 15 points, five rebounds and a pair of assists.
Andrew Merlo led McDaniel (1-3, 0-2) with 15 points while Echols finished with 11. Tyler Rudd recorded a double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds, hitting 8-of-8 free throws.
The Red Devils improve to 4-1 overall and 2-0 in the Centennial Conference. They travel to Johns Hopkins on Saturday to face the Blue Jays at 3:00 pm.
