(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson men's basketball team held off a late run by visiting Ursinus College on Saturday to post an, 80-75, Centennial Conference win on Saturday. The Red Devils were a remarkable, 27-for-27, from the free throw line.
Ursinus took an early lead before the Devils answered as the teams played to a 9-9 tie in the opening minutes. The Red Devils went on a run in the middle of the half to take a 31-19 lead at the 9:33 mark. Senior Logan Furr (Sharon, Mass./Beaver Country Day) hit a pair of free throws and knocked-down a three-pointer to trigger a 12-3 run for Dickinson.
The Bears cut the lead to eight before the Devils closed out the half with a 9-2 stretch to hold a 48-33 advantage at the break. Dickinson held a double-digit lead through the opening seven minutes of the second half. Ursinus closed the gap to six with 11:52 on the clock, but the Devils quickly rebuilt the lead to 65-33 with 10:01 remaining.
The Bears made a late run in the final five minutes, pulling within a point with just 15 seconds to play in regulation. The Bears used a 7-0 tilt to erase as 13-point lead, cutting the deficit to 74-71, with 2:26 on the clock.
Both teams were solid from the line down the stretch as the Bears tried to claw their way back. Sophomore Gerry Wixted (Moorestown, N.J./Lawrenceville School) and first-year Brandon Angradi (Milford, Pa./Delaware Valley) combined to hit four straight in the final 15 seconds to secure the win.
Ursinus had a chance to tie in the final seconds but a strong play by Wixted and a steal by senior Chris Barsanti (Hummelstown, Pa./Tilton School) led to a pair of free throws for Angradi with less than two seconds to play.
Wixted scored 31 points, going 10-for-10 from the free throw line, and controlling seven rebounds. Barsanti went 6-for-6 from the stripe, scoring 14 points on 4-of-6 shooting from the floor. He added four assists, six rebounds and a pair of steals.
Junior Tucker Landy (Durham, Conn./Xavier) reached double-figures with 10 points and four rebounds. Furr finished with eight points, as did junior point guard Adam Honig (Chappaqua, N.Y./Chappaqua). Honig also tallied four assists while Angradi tallied seven points on the day.
Jon Ward led Ursinus with 17 points and eight rebounds as they slip to 4-5 and 3-2.
The Red Devils were perfect from the line, converting all 27 free throw attempts in the game. They improve to 6-2 overall and 4-1 in the Centennial Conference. Dickinson is home again on Monday, December 17th, hosting Shenandoah University at 6:00 pm.
