(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Red Devil women's volleyball team suffered a 3-0 loss to Lebanon Valley in its first match of the Dickinson Invitational on Friday. The Red Devils battled in the second and third sets before falling, 25-19 and 25-18. The Dutchwomen claimed the opener, 25-15.
First-year Laura Silverman (Marlborough, Mass./Marlborough) led the Devils with seven kills while three players recorded six in the match. Classmate Emily Smith (Victor, N.Y./Victor) tallied six kills, 11 digs and a pair of aces while Jessie Shaffner (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park) chipped in with six kills and five digs.
Senior Sam Iazzetta (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) added six kills as well. First-year setter Jenn Morrissey (Rockville, Md./Good Counsel) handed out 24 assists and recorded four digs. Juniors Grace Morgan (York, Pa./York Suburban) and Joanna DeCastro (Far Hills, N.J./West Morris Mendham) combined for 13 digs.
In the nightcap, the Devils turned in a strong performance against Lycoming, suffering a 3-2 setback in a marathon finale to Friday's competition. Smith had a monster outing, recording a match-high 22 kills to go with five digs and a pair of blocks.
The Devils dropped the first set, 25-15, but rallied to pull in front, 2-1. The survived a marathon on set two, winning 25-22 and captured the third, 25-16. The Warriors answered with a 25-18 decision to fourth a deciding set. Lycoming jumped out to a 5-0 lead before Dickinson came back to take a 6-5 lead. The Warriors held on to close out the match, 15-12.
Shaffner reached double-figures with 11 kills while Morrissey dished out 38 more assists, adding five digs and a pair of blocks as well. Silverman chipped in with eight kills at the net while Morgan tallied a team-high 15 digs.
The Red Devils (1-6) return to action on Saturday morning, opening up day two with an 11:00 match against Penn State Altoona. They face York College in their second match of the day at approximately 3:00 pm.
